July has been pretty mild, lots of overcast mornings and often with a heavy drizzle. The garden loves it! We don't usually get any summer rain so this extra bit of moisure helps keep things green and fresh. It's also an excellant time to take photos!
Many of the roses are now into their second flush of the season:
My Rose (Rosa 'Gebrueder Grimm'), love this rose!
I have my South Africa rose still in it's 5 gal. pot which I planted bare root last Nov. It has now rooted into the ground. I now have a spot picked out for it and will plant it soon. The foliage is a healthy light green and the blooms just glow! Nothing like it in my garden, a lovely yellow tangerine shade, reminds me of an orangesicle.
Floribunda Rose (Rosa 'Cafe')
Rose (Rosa 'Lady Emma Hamilton') just put out a ton of new bronze growth and is getting quite large. It's coral blooms look especially nice against that bronze.
Rose (Rosa 'Jeri Jennings') has nice blooms on it's second flush now that the rose weevils are gone. Iris Hope is the larger white blooms in the back. It's backed up by Florist Silver Dollar (Eucalyptus pulverulenta 'Baby Blue') on the left and a Eastern Ninebark (Physocarpus opulifolius Coppertina™) on the right.
Rose (Rosa 'Distant Drums') colors are so distinct! Seeing the blooms is bittersweet for me. It always reminds me of my best friend I lost to C in 2008, it was her favorite rose. I couldn't even buy it for a couple of years, too emotional for me but now it makes me smile, a teary smile sometimes, but a smile nonetheless.
This is one stem on Cinco de Mayo, a bouquet!
Adobe Sunrise/ is happily reblooming with Lavender 'Dilly Dilly'.
Orange juice in a bloom, Louise Clements
And some garden shots:
If you check out my earlier blog, you can see how fast my little golden Black Locust (Robinia pseudoacacia 'Frisia') is growing!
Lily 'Dizzy' and a gladiola
Working on these areas now, adding a path down the center and on the right, about two feet from the railroad ties, we are planning to add a row of grapes. Living in wine country, ya gotta have grapes! These will be eating grapes though. The second shot is part of the area now opened up to me after daughter's large dogs moved out. A lot of work ahead.
I'm usually pretty careful when deadheading older blooms as I have so many bees in the garden, many of them napping in the flowers in the cooler time of day but a couple of weeks ago when snapping off an old rose I got stung on the wrist from one of these sleeping large fuzzy bees, yowzer! A spritz of benadryl spray took the pain down and in a couple of days the swelling was gone. Found a dead one in the garden a few days later so you can see how big they are. A good way to get some cooperative posing without the fear of being stung. (although I have to admit I kept expecting it to wake up from it's deep sleep while handling it!) Still love the bees, the sound of the garden alive with buzzing, just have a healthy respect for them. Make sure to enlarge and see it's furry coat!
