Today I finally finished weeding the strawberries and mulched. We used dried grass that David collected after Ira mowed. It worked really well since it was already dried. The straw is soaking wet so that was a no go. I did spread out four bales of wheat straw to dry and then David can mow it tomorrow to use as mulch.

I picked a couple of eggplant, some peppers and 2 butternut squash. Tonight for dinner I fixed the eggplant grilled with grilled peppers and seared tomato slices and topped the eggplant then added some parmesan cheese. It was pretty darn good. I don't think I have really eaten eggplant before that I can remember. Maybe deep fried a long time ago? I don't know.

Ira ran the springtooth plow through the rows where the potatoes and lettuce were. A few potatoes popped up but not many. Maybe David will get around to rototilling that tomorrow so I can plant the root crops where the lettuce was. Strawberries will go where the potatoes were. That will be the third row of strawberries so next fall the first row will get tilled under. Doing a three year rotation. I would like to consider moving them from the regular garden so we don't have to worry about the rotation but I'll talk to Matt about that.

Matt would like me to cut back on the garden since I can't keep up and it's overwhelming. This year is not a good basis since I ended up babysitting when Ennie's mom went back to Panama. I honestly feel if I had gotten everthing mulched as I planted I would have been able to keep up with it. Also we did run out of straw so I didn't have anything to mulch with. This year I want to get more straw before winter so I will have plenty in spring when the farmers run out of it.

I am willing to cut back the flowers by half. Except for wanting every variety there ever was, I don't need full rows of salvia, yarrow, dahlia, mums and daisies. Or celosia. I probably do need a full row of zinnias though. And pull out all the volunteer rudbeckia!!! I swear every year I will and I just can't! LOL!

After seeing Chelle's post about permaculture and making a raised bed with whatever is on hand, I think that is what I am going to do for the beds around the greenhouse at the farm. And make it all an herb garden. Maybe a few large plants along the fence, but otherwise, all herbs.

I have a full row of dahlia that were from seed but I have to mark them because I will transplant to upper garden by playset except a few select. Here is one I will keep.

I am not going to the farm tomorrow. I desperately need to do some chores around the house here. Well, maybe I can finish by 11:00 or so and we can go over so David can mow the straw.
