beckygardener's blog: Growing Daylilies

Posted on Oct 19, 2013 9:54 AM

I grow a variety of plants in my yard. Most are grown from seeds or cuttings shared with me by other gardeners. The one plant that I grow an abundance of is Daylilies! I cross-pollinate them by hand every year to create more that are unique from the parent daylilies. I can usually get blooms during the second year. I don't have names for any of them or know their parentage.

My original daylily plants came from generous online gardeners who shared some of their seeds with me. I feel very fortunate to have received some beautiful hybrids from those seeds! Thank you ... you know who you are!

I germinate my annually crossed seeds in small plastic containers in a south window during the Winter. They get planted outside together in small retangular containers during the first growing season. At the end of the season (in the Fall), they get planted into the ground. And typically, most will then bloom for the first time the following Spring.

It's always fun to see what the very first blooms look like on the new daylily plants! Some of them do very well here in the south, others don't. Being a gardener on a limited budget, this is how I have grown my garden.
