In my blog back in March, I posted photos of the new rock retaining wall my brother-in-law built. We had planned to plant a row of eating grapes. There are additional photos in that post.
A couple of weeks ago, Brad and I finally worked a full day loading several wheelbarrow loads of soil to fill it, added stakes and heavy duty wire line for supports and I planted 5 different varieties of grapes:
Seedless Grape (Vitis 'Canadice')
Seedless Grape (Vitis 'Flame')
Fox Grape (Vitis labrusca 'Glenora')
Fox Grape (Vitis labrusca 'Marquis')
Table Grape (Vitis vinifera 'Ruby Seedless')
So the grapes will be trained to grow along the wire just like in a traditional vineyard. As they grow taller and longer, we'll add a second line of wire at the top of the stakes. There are tiny grape clusters already developing on several of the plants, just hope we can keep the raccoons from stealing them!
The bare dirt in the grape bed bugs me, I want to plant something to cover it but don't want anything too tall to interfere with the grapes so I am still debating options.
I created a triangular shaped small bed between the grape bed and a larger perennial bed by using some left over rocks, including a couple more small clay pipes and clay pots. I added mostly cutting flowers so I hope it fills in quickly. We had a pile of shredded pine mulch from when a neighbor had their tree cut down so we used that as path much. Look forward to everything filling in.
