Calif_Sue's blog: May- June blooms

Enjoying the succession of blooms, from iris in early spring to the first flush of the roses and now the daylilies. Trying to find a good balance to have something blooming or the right foliage color combos throughout the season is always a challenge. Here are a few highlights from the last couple of months.

Rose (Rosa 'Caramella') didn't get pruned back this past winter so the blooms at the top stood over 6 feet tall. When they opened, the wind and the weight of the blooms bent all the stems forward, eye level now. How accomodating!

The mass of little blooms on Rose (Rosa 'Ghislaine de Feligonde') is a sight to see!

I planted this Rose (Rosa 'Sally Holmes') along the back fence from a 1 gal. pot a couple of years ago, it sure is happy here. Just bought another one for a fence section a few yards away. The large single blooms form in large clusters.

A combo I am really thrilled about is the intense purple of Clematis 'Romantika' and the yellow foliaged Poet's Jasmine (Jasminum officinale Fiona Sunrise)
You can see the clematis on one of the very last photos at the bottom. Check out the visitor on the second bloom shot.

Rose (Rosa 'Lady Emma Hamilton') and Clematis Franziska Maria™ played well together this year, I had large blooming stems of the clematis draping itself across rose branches, sure was a bright combo!

I planted a grape on this trellis last year, these shots are taken a month apart, amazing how fast it reached the top.

Path view with my favorite English Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia 'Hidcote'), I am adding more for that repeated color effect, they stay shorter than most lavenders and the blooms are a good strong color so they really show well. The self seeded poppies in various shades of gold and orange sure make a nice combo with the lavender colors!

I added a decorative urn pot to this lawn bed (still need to wash off the dirt .from the bottom). I will plant something low at it's base. The self seeded lavender Tall Verbena (Verbena bonariensis) on the right is beautiful against that golden locust!

and a couple shots of garden blue belly lizards, also called western fence lizards. The middle shot shows how some have darker blue spots on the backs too. The third shot is an alligator lizard.
