LysmachiaMoon's blog: I Dig Onions

Like, wow, man. I really dig onions. *LOL* Got my whole bed of onions dug out and starting the curing process. The weather could not be better for this...cool, dry, breezy, sunny. I've got the majority of them spread out on old bedsheets under the crabapple tree to start the process. There's a second batch spread on the path in the garden, but I'll be moving them out to the bedsheets today. I am pleased with my harvest. The main patch put out some very nice size onions, the second patch, which got put in a lot later has small onions, but they will be good whole in stews, etc.

Now that the onions are out, I've got to dig over that whole bed and get that burdock out of there. A burdock growing in the fence must have dropped seeds into the bed and now for the past couple of years, it's just solid throughout. I must have dug out about 100 seedlings yesterday, and even the small ones have roots that go down pretty far. I was told that the roots are edible and I feel bad just tossing them, but I really dont think I want to have to bother with them.

I'm hoping to get back out there this morning and finish digging over that bed. I'm of 2 minds here: I was going to put in my fall cabbage there, but then I thought...why tempt fate by planting delicious cabbage right next to the fence where the groundhogs might spot them? Maybe it would be better to keep those types of things more toward the center of the garden. So now I'm thinking of moving my strawberry bed there....it would be a good spot for them. Hmm.... what to do what to do?

The young chickens had their first "all day out" yesterday. It went well, nobody got eaten. I did see Tucker the cat peering at them from the deep grass with that ear-flattened look that says "mmmm...tasty..." but I'm hoping the birds are too big and he's too old to do any damage.

R decided to "prune" the young mimosa near the deck steps. (He claims that because one ferny branch touches his shoulder as he walks by (on a 10 foot wide open stretch) he "can't even get thru there anymore!" *sigh* So he cut the branches back and it looks awful, but I did not say anything. It's pointless because the damage is done and I suspect he does these things to push my buttons. If I ignore it, I win. Childish, but there you go. At any rate, he's totally clueless about plants and I know that within a week or two the upper branches of the mimosa will start to bend down to cover the bare spot so .... I guess he'll be unable to walk past the tree again *LOL*.

The 2 feral kittens have a vet appt. tomorrow morning. I'd like the vet to look them over and worm them (I usually do the deworming with the older cats, but I'm always afraid to overdose little ones.) They're still nursing on-and-off so I don't yet want to try to catch the mom and get her spayed. That's going to be tough. With a cat, you get one chance. If you blow it, it could be never before you can trick her again.

R has a doctor appointment this afternoon with a gastroenterologist. He's having digestive problems; he's already had a couple of tests and everything checked out ok, so I'm hoping it's nerves. I think it's suspicious all this seem to flare up right after his deadbeat bro and sis started calling here asking for large sums of money. We'll see. I just hope it's nothing serious.

One of my bright pink coneflowers finally bloomed. One bloom, on a 6 inch stalk. It is not worth it. I think if I want color I'll plant zinnias instead. These "color" coneflowers just don't seem vigorous. Again, we'll see.

MUST must must get out there with the plastic ribbon and mark the colors on daylilies I want to divide later in the year. I've also got to make a note of bloom time. the row of daylilies and coneflower and yarrow along the veg garden fence is making a spectacular show and I'd like to duplicate that along the driveway and in the Top Border.
