Seedfork's blog: Looks like the cold days are near

Finally finished up removing all the Christmas decorations today. Yesterday I took down all the outside decorations that were left and today I took the tree down and tossed that dang thing. We bought it three years ago and the lights that were on it have given problems for the past two years. We bought it because if one light went out the rest were suppose to stay on, but instead of one light going out entire sections went out, this morning when I plugged in the top section to check it out, all the lights were out. The bulbs that were blown were all black looking, not like it was just an individual but all the bulbs in a strand were blown and black. So new tree next year, my wife says she wants a nine foot tree, and with no pre wired bulbs this time.
The past couple of days have been very warm, had a few days of stormy weather and then some nice clear days. So yesterday I realized I still had my bag of alfalfa pellets (the only bag I ever bought) so I decided it would be a good time to spread them out. I was able to cover the rose bed and two perennial beds and got them dug in just under the surface.
I know Jan. does not seem like the time to be putting out fertilizer, but I don't really consider this to be fertilizer, more of a soil amendment and food for the worms. I do hope it will stimulate the growth of the plants, but not until spring. I looked it up on the web and its activation time is from
one to four months.
It is a shame the temps are going to get so cold, down to 18 degrees they predict. The daylilies were really putting on a lot of new growth. This will kill it all back, but there were aphids showing up on some of the plants and this should take care of that problem for a little while.
