LysmachiaMoon's blog: Light snow; terrarium jars

Posted on Jan 14, 2015 9:19 AM

Light snow started around 10 a.m. We're on the northern edge of a southern coastal storm, so not expecting too much accumulation. *heh heh* I wonder if gardeners in tropical/subtropical areas have a completely different weather vocabulary? We have things like "wind chill" "accumulation" and (my favorite) "Alberta Clippers" (I always picture a snow-white pirate ship in full sail roaring down out of the north). There's also "polar vortex" which I detest because it sounds so apocalyptic.

Anyways: I was hoping to get outside this afternoon and do more brush clearing/cleanup in the Fairy Glen/Asian Garden area but I don't think that will happen with this snow fall. I just can't get over how tickled I am with that area! I'm really looking forward to working with it in the upcoming year. I actually find myself thinking about it when I first wake up in the morning....

Yesterday, my next door neighbor gave me 7 very big glass jars with lids, the kinds that are used to store potpourri for sale in stores. Each one is probably about 2/3 gallon (rough estimate). I think I'd like to try turning them into terrariums/"fairy jars" and selling them at my plant sale this summer. I've got one in the sink soaking off the labels right now. I might take a drive up to C.burg tomorrow (weather permitting) and visit the big craft mart up there...see if I can find anything cheap that I can use. Definitely I will be scouting along the roads, woods, and byways for found material: interesting bits of stone, wood, moss, tiny plants. This is where being an inveterate walker really comes in handy! I know all the nooks and crannies for miles around.

Made the first baby steps on my "Daffodil Drive" project for the neighborhood. Called up Google Maps and was able to count houses. My rural road starts out near a state highway with 32 houses very closely spaces...a typical neighborhood. Then, about a half-mile back, there's a big farm and from there south there are also 32 houses...only they are on 2 acres and up lots, with some farm fields in between. I was a bit surprised that there are 64 households on the road! My plan is to distribute 5 daffodil bulbs to each household so I'll need about 320-330 bulbs. Definitely doable! I think I might spend a bit of time this afternoon writing up a rough draft of a flyer to distribute and a poster for the Post Office. I'd love to see this "blossom" and help bring this neighborhood together.

Sooo.....I have quite a few "projects" to keep me busy during the bad weather of January and February. I need to learn about terrariums, I'd like to get back to learning my way thru the page-making software program I have, need to do some research work on accessible gardening....plus there's still "house projects" that I need to get done: paint the kitchen, refinish the old tea table, refinish the dining room table top. I did order new slipcovers this morning so that's one thing checked off the list.
