LysmachiaMoon's blog: A week for working in the garden

Posted on Jan 19, 2015 7:50 AM

If the weather forecasters are to be trusted (as they rarely are), this may be our "January Thaw" and a good week to get some things done in the garden. I would LOVE to get up to PH and get a big load of mulch or compost or both. It's times like these i wish I had one of those big big dump trucks instead of a little S-10 (which I love).

I've got a "shopping list" of stuff that I'd like to scavenge for my garden and for various projects. I'd also like to get a start with some hypertufa projects that I'm hoping to do in the basement. Yesterday (Sunday) was a wash; I woke up feeling headachy and blah and spent the day at the computer working. Today I need to finish up some projects and then my neighbor is taking me to lunch (schedules and weather permitting).

RE: Grape vines as plant tee-pee support. Oh holy moley....brain wave. I can turn my old tomato cages (cone shaped wire) upside down, tie the grape vines to them to hide the wires and presto chango....rustic plant supports that won't wobble and fall apart. Where do I come up with them???!! *HA* Now I'm going to have to find a LOT more grape vines to cut into lengths.

Time to get out the notebook and do a walkabout. I need to make notes of things that need lifted, divided, moved etc.

Got an email saying my first big veg seed order was shipped out on Saturday, so that may be arriving here today...such excitement. You really have to be a gardener to understand the happy anticipation that the first batch of seeds provokes. I get more excited over it than I do over Xmas.

I have the beginnings of a bunion and a hammertoe on my right foot. The bunion has been with me for several years, gradually getting worse to the point where the best shoes I can find are those "toe cap" boys sneakers which are very comfortable but let's face it: You can't wear 'em to the prom. This foot trouble is hereditary: my mom, sister, and brother all have/had very bad feet. My sister's were so bad she had surgery on both feet. It's weird because growing up in the 60s/70s I was often barefoot or sandaled, and I've never worn high heels or pointy toed shoes except for rare dress-up occasions. But the toe inexorably begins to turn toward its neighbors...

Anyways: I would like to do something about this before it gets any worse (no pain now except for the irritation of the bunion skin rubbing on shoes) and it would be so nice to be able to wear ordinary pretty lady shoes again... I thought maybe an orthopedist and surgery would be the way, then came across a 'conservative approach' to treatment: Toe Spacers. They are sort of like braces for your toes. At $65 a pair, not cheap but certainly less than I'd pay for doctor visits and surgery. As well, I've found a series of exercises that are geared toward strengthening the lax muscles in the foot. I was surprised to learn that a bunion is NOT excess bone growth. The bump is the normal toe joint dislocated outward by the fact that the big toe is pulling inward. Hmm. The doctor who explained this said that in less severe cases (hopefully, mine), bracing and exercises can sometimes pull the toes back into correct alignment. I'm willing to give it a shot. I think once my Toe Spacers arrive, I'll get R to take a pic of my feet and then maybe try to take a pic every month to see if there's any progress. The doctor who recommended these did say that (like tooth braces) it can take months to realign the toes. So, exercise those toes!
