LysmachiaMoon's blog: Snow! and Starting a terrarium

Posted on Jan 24, 2015 9:03 AM

We have about 3 inches of heavy wet snow on the ground and intermittent snow all day today (Sat. Jan. 24). It started out snow last evening, then turned to sleet, then snow overnite, so it's a very wet heavy mix. My mugho pine below the deck is spread out flat....once again, it makes me realize how monstrous that "shrub" has become and how nice it would be to be able to see beyond it, to the southern border of my property. I'm really waffling on what to do with it. It's a nice healthy specimen so I'd hate to get rid of it. But it really has outgrown the spot....I'm thinking cloud pruning and thinning the stems/trunks.

Got my first veg seed order from Jungs! That's always so much fun, like opening a xmas present. I have a second smaller seed order coming from another catalog, and there's backordered plants still to come from Jung when the weather is warmer. I gave in and bought a couple packets of seeds at Lowe's...the cheapo 50 cents a pack kind. I bought two (sunflowers and nasturtiums) to send to my great-niece Taren for her 4th birthday, along with a cute little sunflower planting kit. I also bought for myself bunching onions and something else I cant remember what.

My neighbor gave me seven very nice big glass jars with glass lids last week and I cleaned up one of them and I've started a little terrarium. I bought some activated charcoal and aquarium gravel at Walmart yesterday...and of course, sucker that I am for sad little creatures, I also came home with a very odd looking (sorta ugly) Betta fish. *sigh* I just couldn't stand to see them in those dirty little cups...if I could, I would have taken them all, but... Anyways, he's now in a gallon jar of fresh water; I'm hoping to get a nice little mini aquarium set up for him later today...it will have to sit and "cure" for a few days before he can live it.

But anyways...the terrarium. Put in a thin layer of charcoal, then compost then set in a lovely little gnarled piece of wood that I found that looks exactly like a miniature tree stump... Then a little artistically sprinkled gravel (the plain kind that is little sand colored pebbles). I'll work on adding more interesting stones and some moss once the weather clears up and I can go "scavenging" for them.

Riley is still not good. She's very unsteady. It comes and goes. Sometimes she seems normal, hopping on and off the sofa in the office and acting absolutely fine. Then other times, it's awful. This morning, I went it to give her breakfast and she was in a heap on the floor, too unsteady to get up. She'd pee'd all over the floor too and seemed utterly exhausted. I got her antibiotic into her and fed her by syringe (she's got a good appetite) and then she seemed better. I'm thinking that if the vet is right and it's inner ear, then maybe she's better after feeding because she has to keep swallowing and that would open up the inner ear. I'm also thinking that leaving her free rein in the office might not be a good idea. She seems to be getting dizzy and disoriented, and then I think she just wanders aimlessly around and around and wears herself out (not to mention making a mess of the floor...tracking thru her water and food dishes). So, I brought in a very big plastic pet crate and set it up with her blanket, etc. and I think I'll try confining her to that for the night. When she was at the vet overnight, she was confined and came home much improved.

I'm also going to do a little online research. I'm still not 100% sure the vet is right about this being inner ear... It's very frustrating, very stressful, very scary. I keep thinking back to that feral mother cat that I found dying last fall...she seemed to be paralyzed when I found her. That could have been simply that she was at the end of her life, but now I'm wondering... Could there be a link?

Still struggling to recover software and whatever files I can from the internet after my big laptop crash. It's so exhausting. Thank goodness I got my oldest Gateway laptop back up and running. I don't know if I can use it for my workhorse, but at least I know it does have a lot of my older files and folder. I'm going to transfer them to a flash drive (I can't seem to get the gateway online) and then upload them to the cloud.

I just wish that this bad spell would pass. It's difficult to keep a positive outlook when everything keeps going wrong.
