Seedfork's blog: The garden plods along...

Posted on Feb 12, 2015 5:38 PM

Well just returned from a week away, nothing important, just house and pet sitting for my oldest daughter. No, I don't want a dog or a cat!
Well after getting unpacked I headed down to check out the garden, which I just knew would have blooming flowers, ready to harvest veggies, and all that sort of stuff...but in reality the garden was pretty near how I left it. I do have quite a few daffodils blooming, two more varieties than when I left. I did have a pink Hyacinth try to bloom, but it looks pretty pathetic. I also now have my first Cemetery Iris blooming. Earlier I had a purple iris bloom, but it was barely out of the ground and was not very pretty, looked to me like it may have almost bloomed last year, and just stopped when the weather turned cold, then with a few warm days just popped open way too early.
I had seen a few carrots before I left and a few more have sprouted but nothing like what I was hoping to see on my return. A very few sparse lettuce plants managed to germinate in the garden, but they will have to be replanted. The turnips and the radishes are coming along pretty well, but still slow growth, just a little larger than when I left.
I think the daylilies are showing the most growth during my absence! Some of them have really put on quite a bit of new growth. I saw in the daylily forum some florida growers are already getting scapes, but I am still a long way from that. Still waiting for a lot of the dormants to even make an appearance.
I had lots of time to kill while I was gone, so I spent much of it in the daylily database and came up with the following list of "Garden Daylilies". These were chosen based on rust resistance which is easy to research in the database, and the tendency to form nice clumps fairly rapidly(not easy to find, but is based on recommendations, and lists, and comments found in various places).
Some of the plants show excellent rust resistance, some just show resistance, but I found something about each of them that made me choose the variety.
