LysmachiaMoon's blog: Bitterly cold

Posted on Feb 13, 2015 8:04 AM

Bitterly cold, only 7F this morning at 7 a.m. Overnight we had terrific winds; I pity anyone or anything that was out in that weather. I know my herd of cats were sticking mighty close to the sofa last night. None of the usual "I want in, I want out, I want in, I want out..." Cats are always on the wrong side of the door.

My Chinese Cabbage and Pak Choi are doing so well, now I'm wondering if I started them too early! At this rate, they're going to be ready for the garden in a couple more weeks! I have got to get a "warm up" tunnel started out there, once these temperatures moderate a bit. Supposed to be bitterly cold all weekend and into next week, but not much in the way of snow forecast. it is a beautiful sunny day now and the wind has died back a bit.

I think the chaos of the past few weeks is finally coming into some order...I am hoping that this weekend goes smoothly and I don't have to deal with any crises.

Must attend a funeral viewing this afternoon; a good friend's older sister passed away with lung cancer. So very sad, and so very very sad that it could have been prevented if she had just quit (or never started) smoking.

So I have this new idea (Oh no, they all groan): I want a small area of garden that makes anyone walking into it feel tiny. I want gunnera and cardiocrinum lilies and those 7 foot tall Himalayan calla lilies....giant elephant ears...dinnerplate dahlias. Ooo...and I'll put a gigantic concrete toad under the gunnera.... Whaddya think?

Itching to do more hypertufa experiements. Might do another bowl this afternoon, maybe using a flat bottomed mold. I'd also like to pour some "mushroom caps" of regular concrete to make "stone mushrooms" for the garden. I'm still looking for a mold to use as the "stem"...I was toying with the idea of waiting until the ground outside is thawed and simply digging out a "mold" in the dirt and using that.
