Seedfork's blog: Not a total loss...the afternoon was great.

Ok, I know down in the twenties is not sounding cold for most people, but for me that is just too cold, down to 21 last night. It did not get above 30 degrees till almost noon. I did get out and walk about a little late this morning, then had lunch and by that time the wind was only blowing about twenty miles an hour so I went for my walk around the lakes.
Got back home and was full of energy and the wind died down some more so I went out looking for grass and leaves. Not much left out there now. Worked my normal routes and came up totally empty, so I diverted over to the country club. A landscaper was reworking some flower beds and had a huge pile of lava rock pulled out by the road on heavy black plastic. I am not a fan of rock in my garden, but I did think about using it for the path down to the bog, decided I just did not want to have to fool with rock any where near where I use the lawn mower.
But, not only did he have that huge pile of lava rocks, he had a petty good sized pile of what I guessed to be mushroom compost that he had dug out of the bed. Great looking stuff, with lots of white fungus ball shaped Mushrooms? Any how it had a potent smell and looked like it would be great for the compost pile. I loaded it all into the truck, but it was full of very fine roots, so tomorrow or whenever I get the time I will have to put it all though my shifter. I tried a few forkfuls though the shifter, but the wire was too fine and it would take forever to shift it. I went back out and found a truck load of bagged leaves, and in that same pile was a baby gate, with about one inch holes and I picked it up thinking it would make a good first screen to run the mushroom compost full of roots though. Then it should go though my regular screener ok. I also picked up three nice bags of shredded oak leaves and added them to the grass clippings I had picked up the other day. So when I get the time I will be mixing that pile altogether along with the mushroom compost and it should make some wonderful compost by next year.
