Seedfork's blog: Last cold nights?

Posted on Mar 8, 2015 8:33 PM

Well, this looks like the end of the cold nights(for the near future). We can always expect more cold weather around this time of year, but some years we get it and some years we don't.
Had full intentions of getting out early with the time change, but due to a poor nights sleep stayed in bed till eight.
Finally got out and stirring, brought all my plants out and put them in the cold frame. Watered everything good and left the cover off the rest of the day. I did put it back on tonight, but that is more to keep the critters out than the cold.
Sprayed the daylilies for aphids again today, several of them had a pretty bad infestation, most of them only had a few but I sprayed them all anyhow because aphids are so good at hiding down in the folds of the new leaves.
New daylilies are popping up here and there all over the garden and I am really getting excited just anticipating the show of blooms this year.
Did not do much till after lunch, then I went out and picked up two truck loads of bagged grass and leaves, went back and got a full truck load of grass and leaves a guy just finished mowing and we loaded the last batch directly into the truck.
Spent the rest of the afternoon emptying the truck and working the thick (three or foot feet) layer of leaves filling up the drainage ditch. I raked as much as I could further down the hill and used a leaf rake to smooth it out, now it looks more like a wide path than a compost pile. I was so pleased as I worked the huge amount of material to see how much it had already decomposed. Really looking super good! Tomorrow the plan is to pick up a couple of more loads, tons of oak leaves have fallen over the past week. Then in my spare time I will unbag the bagged up leaves I picked up and work them into the compost pile. Very little(if any) of the stuff I picked up today will need shredding because most of it felt like it had already been shredded, I will know for sure when I open the bags, but I have become an expert "bag feeler" over the years. I can tell if there are oak leaves or elm leaves without even opening the bag...well sometimes I get it right. If I guess oak leaves I will be right about 90 percent of the time!
