LysmachiaMoon's blog: Finally, springtime

Yesterday (Sunday) was glorious...the morning dawned above freezing, and we reached mid 40s by afternoon. There is still a lot of snow around, I'd estimate about 40% snow cover. The runoff in the farm fields is tremendous....there are small creeks bubbling through those fields. Fortunately, the ground is still so frozen there's no erosion to speak of...yet. These farmers around here really don't seem to understand or care about their land. They cut down all the trees and rip out all the ridges of rock between the fields, they allow people to ride their ATVs back and forth back and forth (mindlessly) over these fields, compacting down the soil. Then they wonder why the corn fields wilt at the first sign of drought. All those nasty trees and rocks were acting like natural sinks for rain/snow. The water would percolate slowly down through them; now it just runs off. The one corn field up the road looks like a parking lot....tire tread marks all over it and the water standing in sheets and running off. *sigh*

I finally got four of my long-handled garden tools sanded and oiled. I've been trying to do that all winter, but the odor of the turpentine/linseed oil mix is really a bit too much for in the basement when you can't open windows. So I was able to do it outside yesterday. I've still got a lot more to do, but this is a good start.

Seeded some asparagus into a flat. The dahlia seeds I planted last week are already germinating. Potted up the rooted cuttings of Christmas Cactus. Mostly, just bored silly and trying to find things to do that are even remotely garden related. If this weather holds, I think I'll get out there and do some major pruning...I've got two very scrawny half dead trees to get down.

Definitely need to put down a concrete pad in front of tool shed...what a swamp.

After the past several weeks of terrible weather, I feel like I need to regroup and get a list going of all the things I need to get done to get ready for the garden season. I had hoped to get some things done working in the basement, but it was too cold even there to do much. So, there's still little "winter projects" that need finished up...

Bought 12 gladiolus bulbs at the dollar store, Yellowstone and Plumtart. I'm going to plant them in a basket and sink it into the ground in the garden...I saw this done on the BBC and it looks like a very good way to plant glads. You can really cram them in together so they support one another and then when the season is done, you just lift the whole basket out and store the bulbs for winter.
