Seedfork's blog: New plants from High School Plant sale

Posted on Apr 7, 2015 3:18 PM

Bright clear sunny day, an occasional breeze, just a beautiful day. We do still need rain, it is promised in the near future.
The high school plant sale is going on this week, so I wanted to go see what they had. I missed it last year.
I got out a little early to look over the garden, a few new scapes up on the daylilies, one more hosta up also.
I had some bagged leaves left over from yesterday I wanted to use for mulching the daylilies, but decided instead to use it where last years mulch pile had been. I had some volunteer plants coming up there so those had to be moved first. They were mostly zinnias, I had a row of marigolds that had just been planted and I had enough of the zinnias to put one plant in between each marigold, had a few zinnias left and just worked them into the beds.
Then I mulched the area to keep the weeds down, not many were present but with the warm weather it would not be long before the entire area would be covered if I did not weed it everyday. The four bags of leaves were just enough to do that little area. I then watered the transplants and it was time to head to the plant sale.
They had lots of tomato plants but none like I wanted (very early) I had plenty of the main season type. They had some peppers, but they were all very small. So I passed on the peppers too. Went to look at the flowers and ended up with two flats full ($10.00) per flat, what ever would fit: singles, six packs, 12 packs etc.
I had purchased some Begonia there two years ago, and wanted some more and lucky for me they did have some, Vodka Begonia.

I had been wanting some Profusion Zinnias so I bought five of those, orange was the only color available.

I always love the looks of Gazania and they normally grow the Big Kiss variety and they had it again this year.

I normally grow a lot of marigolds, but only have a few so far, and I could not pass up the big orange blooms, Marigold Antigua Orange.

I grew some of these two years ago and thought they were the most beautiful marigolds I had ever grown, Marigold Disco Mix.

Got all the new plants out in the garden, some here some there, a few just about everywhere.
Won't show them all, but the daylily beds down in the bog are much brighter now, at least I will have some color while I wait on the blooms.
