LysmachiaMoon's blog: Working in the little "knot" garden

Posted on Apr 21, 2015 5:13 PM

I don't know what else to call it (because I'm tired, it's late and I really can't think straight)...I have a little 12 square foot garden that I've quartered on the diagonal, put a tiny circular bed in the middle and four little paths radiating out...so not exactly a knot garden, but oh never mind. Anyways, my original plan was that each of teh 4 triangular beds would have a different herb or something: one had strawberries, one ajuga, etc. etc. Well, that did not work too well. The only thing that really did exactly what I'd hoped was the ajuga. So the new plan: 2 opposite beds will have the dark leaved ajuga, the other 2 will have silvery lambs ear. In the center bed is my poor little tree rose, which was doing so well for the past 2 years...but this winter took its toll. It's still alive but half of the top is dead. I'm going to have to do some drastic pruning and it will look pretty shabby for a while.

In doing this work, I dug out a nice clump of sweet woodruff, moved to Fairy Glen. A big clump of chives (not sure yet) and a big clump of summer savory (that will go to the new "scent circle"). Also a bunch of small garlic plants that sprouted from forgotten/unharvested garlic a year ago. I think I'll just spot those into the veg in a line and see what happens.

R. mowed the lawn for the first time this season. Look nice, smells wonderful. We had some violent weather to our north and west last night, but it never reached us.

Smoke the cat is doing well; she was able to use the litter box today and she is starting to show some real interest in food...she is licking baby food off a spoon on her own. She was also able to stand up without crying out in pain, so that is a big improvement. I imagine that in addition to the pelvic fractures (sounds worse than it is...just cracked, not shattered) her ligaments and muscles were also injured, and so this is a good sign that they are healing too.

I realized today that I like old things. When I was younger, I wanted nice new stuff for the house, but I'm glad that I also took on the various odds and ends that my family "gifted" on me...some pieces of furniture, some pots and pans, dishes, flatware...nothing really valuable, nothing "antique" but I realize now how much I like this old stuff and treasure it. I really like my old bedsheets from my mom's house, faded and so silky soft now after decades of laundry. The old cheap flatware that I think my mom got for Green Stamps in the 60s...the old carpets my aunt gave me. Everytime I use these things, I think of the people who had them first and it's a nice feeling. Like having old friends around. I don't think I could toss out my old set of dishes (bought the first month in this house 30 years ago) and buy a new set...it would be like tossing out old friends. So what if they're a bit scuffed around the edges? I like them!
