Seedfork's blog: Photos of the garden

Posted on Apr 23, 2015 6:17 PM

Sunny and a little warmer today with the temp up to 85 deg. F. Still very nice.
I weeded out the rose bed today, it has thousands of little tiny weed seedlings which I think are coming from the hay my neighbor spread all over her flower beds. I was using a small hand weeder and working though the beds and when I got up close to the fence I looked over and saw all the little seedlings coming up underneath the hay. So I am assuming the heavy rain flooded the flower beds and washed the seeds into my rose bed where they sprouted.
Took some pictures of the garden today, still practicing with the camera, learning more every day, but being I am playing with the camera so much I have not been taking the time to try and get the best pictures, just trying the different settings mostly. So some of these are not very good.
My old camera was only five mega pixels and the new one is sixteen mega pixels, and I decided why shoot with 16 mega pixels which takes forever to upload and does not look one bit better on a computer, so I set the camera today to shoot at 4 mega pixels and it is much faster uploading photos now and they look the same. It is seldom I print any photos, only when I get new plants and need to add them to my notebook, and of course for special occasions like birthdays and graduations I would use the 16 mp setting in case I did want to print pictures.
I tried to show the standing water in this bed, but it was harder than trying to show a slope, I just could not get the water to stand out from the mud. Anyhow the water is right at the surface and when you walk in this bed the water squishes up all around where you step.

Right next to that imprint is one of my first daylilies to bloom this year, nothing outstanding, don't think it even has a name, but still early to bloom.

This bed is a triangular shaped bed, and in one corner the daylilies are all named cultivars and I plan to spread them over the entire bed. At the present moment all the other daylilies in this bed are just Fulva, Flore Pleno, a pretty yellow NOid, and a nice clump of Baja. Next year I hope it will be full of named variety clumps.
A view of the bog area looking down from the slope up above.

The area over on the right is almost as boggy as the triangular bed, you can hear the water squishing below your feet as you walk on the oak leaf paths. The upper part of this bed on the right contains my daylily seedlings I grew myself, and my amaryllis seedlings I am growing. It is strange this bed is actually wetter at the top than at the bottom.

This area is over to the left of the short path leading down to the triangular bed. I plan to fill it completely over time with all rust resistant daylilies. Now there are only two in the bed so far that are not listed as being rust resistant.

The little cold frames are all empty now, except for one up higher on the slope, and I just have some onion seedlings and potted up transplants sitting in it. You can see it in the top right corner of the previous photo, between the onions and the peas and carrots.

What's left of two hills of cucumbers after the O'possum passed through last night.

Looking down the path between the tomatoes and the daylilies. You can see my trap with the bait sitting inside.

Another view from higher up on the slope.

Looking up the slope toward my back yard, and the rose beds in the far distance at the far side of the yard. The back yard is fenced in with a chain link fence but the bog area, is outside my fence so it is deer territory. Time to be watching out for them too as the asiatic lilies have buds.
