LysmachiaMoon's blog: Potatoes and pole beans planted

Posted on May 5, 2015 9:52 AM

I finally got those russets in the ground! I planted my early red, Yukon Gold, and white potatoes last week, but one thing or another kept pulling me away from clearing out a bed and just getting those russets in. But it's done now.

I also set up 2 bean tee-pees and planted my Kentucky Wonder Wax (yellow) beans and Kentucky Wonder (green) beans. I need to build a 3rd bean tee-pee...this year I'm trying some of those "yard long" beans just for kicks.

Harvested the first asparagus...very disappointing show. That bed has never done well. I was watching a Gardener's World and Monty Don said his asparagus was not doing well either...he courageously ripped out the whole bed. I think I'll probably follow suit. The problem is the soil. Heavy clay. I should have known better but I was lulled into thinking it would do well because my first asparagus bed did great. I forgot that the first bed was NOT in the same spot. I enlarged the veg garden considerably and where the first bed was is now nearer to the center of the veg garden...where the soil is much lighter. The present aspar. bed is at the far west end and the soil there is just boggy thick clay.

So...I think that this is the time to redo that whole (raised) bed. I'll need to haul in some compost and sand, then dig out some of the clay (that can go into the woods to form raised beds for ferns etc.), then just go ahead and replant. Wonderful. Another big project. *sigh*

Today, I've got construction going on....I want to have a corner of the house stone faced and the crew is here putting up the lath that they stick the stone to. It's that "fake" stone but it looks so much like real stone it's amazing. We had the entire end of the house done several years ago and really like it. So now I'm having it wrapped around the corner beside the deck steps. That will make maintenance a lot simpler...trying to keep the siding painted/stained on that steep slope was too difficult.

Put up some lilac bushes in gallon pots for sale on a local website for $2/each and I've already got 15 promised. Yay! Money for my garden addiction!
