Seedfork's blog: My very first bloom on my most wanted plant...but no photo.

I got out early this morning, I had some daylilies I knew should be opening today. Rain was predicted and I wanted to get out and see them before the rains came. Well, 'Orange Velvet' had a beautiful fully opened bloom on it, it has lots of buds and is going to get better as time goes on I think. That one was really nothing special, but just a nice rust resistant daylily that I had acquired just as a filler so to speak. For some time I have been seeing rave reports about 'Primal Scream' and for a couple of years have wanted this plant for the wow power it is supposed to have, and I did have a nice bloom of 'Primal Scream' open this morning. However, it was not the bright blazing orange I had hoped for and it was splotchy looking. Still, it was like 'Orange Velvet' the FFOE, so I was not terribly let down by the first bloom not being a real knockout bloom, looking for better things in the future. The third plant I was expecting to bloom was I think the first daylily I ever put on my Want List. I put it on my list of plants before I ever saw it bloom, it was picked out at the local botanical gardens daylily show plot. I went in the late summer when all the daylilies had ceased blooming and I was looking for the best foliage. 'Red Volunteer' stood out among all the other daylilies as having the best looking foliage...so it was put on my want list. Time sort of blurs for me lately, so I am not sure how long ago that actually was, three years at least. Today I was finally able to see the plant bloom in my garden, but unfortunately the plant is not an Early Morning Bloomer. It was only about half way opened when I first saw it...I went back later around ten o'clock. I had to run to the bank and then I stopped by and picked up a beautiful load of grass clippings and leaves, it was really good stuff. Already the smoke was coming from the pile and everything was damp from the rains the past few days...I digress. Back to 'Red Volunteer'. I got all the composting stuff unloaded then went down to see if the bloom had opened, it had and it was a large beautiful bloom, not perfect but very impressive in size and color! So I went in to get the camera, got inside but got distracted by a few things I had to do and by the time I headed back out the door the rain was pouring down. It has continued to rain the rest of the afternoon, so no photo.

'Bonnie Corley' is quickly becoming one of my favorites, it just photographs beautifully.

The red salvia is still looking great.
