LysmachiaMoon's blog: Why it is worth it

Yesterday, despite the heat (90sF) and high humidity (90%) and the heavy deadline load of office work, I made myself go outside around 4 p.m., up to the Fairy Glen, to do some much needed weeding. With all this rain and warm temps, the place is a jungle...I told myself I'd at least weed out the paths. Turned out that was about all that really did need doing for the lower part of that garden (the upper part is very new and it's teeming with small weeds...will get to that later this week). So, I spent a nice hour up there tidying up...and then it hit me: this is why all the work is worth it. I stood there, shoulder deep in flowers and just looked around and loved it. It's beautiful. It's the garden of my dreams...it's perfect, in all its imperfections. Tall pink lilies, bright yellow daylilies, the silver green of lamb's ear, the lilac colored nodding onions, and everywhere green green and more green...weeping willow, viburnum, lilac....pink roses, tall white cow's parsley, towers of pale yellow mullein...it's perfect. It's that amazing blend of nature's hand and mine working together...

It's moments like that make me really glad I'm a gardener!

Today is going to be a harried day. I have to drive up to Gettysburg to "do lunch" with my great-niece A. whom I have never met before (unless it was when she was a baby...I don't remember...). She is 17. I'm both looking forward to and dreading this. I hope it goes all right. My bff told me not to worry "she's family." Yeah, but you don't know my family *HAR HAR*. Keep fingers crossed.

I have got to find time to do some harvesting: peas, black raspberries, strawberries...everything is going to rot if I don't get in there and start picking. Also, have to dust the cabbages with something...the cabbage moths/worms have really been chewing away...
