Gymgirl's blog: MY HURRICANE IKE REPLACEMENT FENCE IS UP!

Posted on Oct 10, 2011 4:16 PM

The new fence installation was scheduled to begin the morning of Saturday, October 1st due to a 1-day delay. The materials were to arrive around 9ish, and so were the contractors. So, I planned a quickie grocery shopping list and a quickie run to Southwest Fertilizer down on Bissonnet to pick up more Perlite and a hose-end sprayer, before the contractor and mat'ls were to arrive.

It was a lovely early morning drive there before the freeway traffic and the sun, since they open up at 7am. On the way, I discovered a never-too-crowded Starbucks at South Rice, and finally had the opportunity to describe to a barista just what kinda coffee I'd been dying to put together. Voila! Not only did she give me exactly what I've been missing, but, I'm getting more coffee for less money! Can you say, "cha-ching?" I also went past a Chilean restaurant I googled once but didn't realize how close it was to me. GPS on that...I gotta get out early on more weekends....

Well, after the quick in and out at SW Fertilizer, who calls but the contractor saying he's sitting in my driveway, 'cause he decided to start tearing the old fence down early (and this wasn't even part of my contract!!!!) Thank you, God! So, no early morning, leisurely grocery shopping today...

The construction process was so exciting! I learned quite a few things about construction and about being your own boss. One is to stand your ground with your contractors, and accept the fact that you are paying them to do what YOU want done! I'm sure my contractors did not expect my project oversite and scrutiny, but, I work for my money. NO one is giving it to me for free...and every penny I spend has to be accounted for.

By the last day, I had collected every piece of scrap lumber (even the tiny little alphabet block chunks which will become some sort of yard art, or at least serve to level some of the buckets), and all of my leftover cedar pickets. We returned ten bags of Quikrete, and fourteen 2x4s, for credit. And, since I had doled out my Deckmate screws one box at a time, by the time they were finishing up on the gate lock (which took them 1.5 hours to get right...), and I saw they were finished with my screws, I collected an almost-full box of 3" and 1/2 a box of 2". At $30/box, these are not giveaways...hey, they took all the old panels, and the concrete busted off of the old galvanized posts..

Here's my fence after 3" of rain fell on it yesterday. Thank you, God, for my new fence.

Hugs!
