LysmachiaMoon's blog: Road trip

I spent Friday and Saturday on a road trip to West Virginia with a friend. She is a semi-pro photographer and wanted to get some pics for contests, etc. We saw some nice (spotty) leaf color and I think she got some very good shots! As soon as she sends me copies, I will try to post. I mean no disrespect to the great people of the great state of West Virginia, but I think I've seen enough mountains and trees to last me a good long while! We started out from Cumberland Maryland and I believe we must have put a total of 500 miles on her car, almost all of it on country roads (hums John Denver in the background). We saw the New River Gorge Bridge (frightening and impressive), Babcock State Park (the Grist Mill is wonderful!), a couple of lakes near there, Spruce Knob (never again...the view was worth it, but that one lane road winding up the mountainside to 4,000+ feet with no guard rails and cars coming down as well as going up...this may be a feature in my nightmares for years to come....), and Seneca Rocks. Trying to describe these things is pointless...they have to be seen to be believed.

Once we actually got to the top of Spruce Knob, the gardener/amateur botanist in me kicked in...my god, what a place! The air is so pure, so cold, that there are actually mosses and lichens that look like those that grow in the tundra! The whole top is fairly densely wooded with a very short needled spruce and under the trees the ground is covered with moss and lichen. There was a lot of monarda too. I am hoping my friend got some pics of this vegetation because it was amazing.

Home again, I finally got the support posts put up in the raspberry patch and the cord strung between them. So hopefully next summer the canes won't be sprawling all over the place. Now all that patch needs is a good mulch for winter. Sold $5 worth of rooted black raspberry plants too!

It is very clear, chilly and still this evening and I am wondering if we'll see frost tonight. Tomorrow I must get the potatoes out of the ground. I took some cuttings from my sweet potato patch and I really do need to think about lifting them too. Also, must get the garlic planted. I need to find a better spot. Last fall I planted the garlic in the east corner of the garden and it was too shady and wet...I got very straggly little heads.
