I remember a time about 15 years ago, when I honestly thought, it's all the same, I can't learn anything much about the garden. That was when I was still struggling to figure out where exactly I wanted my 2 acre garden to "go"...the idea of a "farmette" with livestock was fast fading, the dream of an organic apple orchard had died, and then there was that period of a couple years where we actually thought we were going to have to move to another county...and everything was put on hold while I struggled to get that in motion...and then had it come to a crashing halt.
But then I finally figured it out....and I started to not only look at my garden in a new light, but to really begin to let my imagination go when it came to what I wanted. Why not a rock garden? Not the kind I saw in other people's yards, a scattering of loose rocks with plants between. Why not take advantage of these mammoth slabs of limestone that are poking up in spots in my garden? Cleared off a big area of them and started planting...and then realized I knew next to nothing about rock gardens. SOMETHING NEW to learn!
Why not a pond? had to learn all about digging and installing a pond, then learn all about water gardening...
Why not a grape arbor. Same thing, had to learn all about growing grapes.
And now, with all the great articles and blogs and information on this site and the vids and info on other online sites, I feel like there's JUST SO MUCH TO LEARN!! I'm always learning something new and fascinating, not just about gardens, but about plants...I'm really keen on botany now.
They're always saying how it's important to keep your mind active now so that when you become older you can stave off memory problems. I think gardening is the best way anyone can find. Now I'm going to go on Amazon and use up some of my points buying what else....GARDENING BOOKS!
