LysmachiaMoon's blog: Lots done this weekend.

I finally had a chance to cast off the shackles of the working world and get out into the garden. Spent the afternoon on Friday just "catching up." Had a ton of backlogged house and yard work to get thru. Then, early Saturday morning...look out. I was outside by sparrow fart. Got 3 concrete Walkmakers poured and in between each pour, while I waited for it to set up, I got started on lifting the "short end" of the driveway bed. Slow going. Lifted out the massive peony clump and divided it. Got 5 very big divisions and a few smaller ones that I potted up for possible sale next spring (It looks like I might have a garden sale in the spring....I've got an awful lot of small stuff that I need to find homes for.) Digging thru that bed is slow going because it is riddled with couch grass and I have to go thru each spadeful by hand. Three of the peony clumps went up to the Fairy Glen, where I've expanded a planting bed. Took some time to just sit up there and admire the garden...it's really coming along nicely. I need a long low bench to put up there by the weeping willow so I can sit and enjoy it. The big poplar logs that I dragged up there years ago are rotting to almost nothing now.

Sunday morning, I continued work on the driveway bed.....big tangled patch of daylilies to get out. I know that I have tawny daylilies, double tawnies, and smaller red daylilies in there, but they're hopelessly intermingled now. So I just dug the whole thing out, separated the clumps, picked out the grass roots and set everything aside. I'm not sure where all these will go.

I lifted a clump of daylilies out of the veg garden border and set them into the end of driveway bed. The thing is....I don't know if these are the pale pink or the pale yellow..... Oh well, either way it will work. Once I get the next big peony clump lifted out of the driveway bed, that will make room for the yellow knockout rose I want to be in the center of that bed. It will be flanked by pink peonies. I'm thinking of putting in lots of dark blue May Night salvia and Autumn Joy sedum as well. And coneflowers. So it will be a sort of pinkish, yellowish theme with the deep blue as accent. We'll see. I tend to make plans and then, willy nilly, stuff gets put in and the effect isn't what I expected but usually looks ok.

In between all this heavy lifting, I've been raking up leaves, bucketing apples up to the wildlife area, and just generally trying to get things tidied up and ready for winter. Picked up 6 bags of leaves from a neighbor, unfortunately, not shredded. I have yet to get any of that great stuff!

Today (Monday) I'm in the office until Noon. Then I think I'll pour the remaining 2 Walkmakers....These will be a bit tricky. I need only a partial form for each one (they have to fit into a tight space next to the veg fence), so I'll be pouring them "freestanding" and then (hopefully) lift them and put them into place. I'd like to get that next big peony clump lifted today too.
