GaNinFl's blog: Volunteers and Freebies

Good morning everyone and God bless...

I'm so looking forward to the new year as it will bring the beginning of the transformation to my Blank Slate. Today there is plenty of liquid sunshine falling but I know the other sunshine will return soon. At some point I need to invest in rain barrels to capture some of this free water. Speaking of free, the past weekend had me removing an above ground pool and 12' x 18' pool deck from my former back yard. I gifted it to my next door neighbor whom was more than happy to volunteer in taking it down and to take it off my hands, the second freebie of the post. During the process of clearing a path for our transporting the before mentioned, I was bagging up leaves that I had pilled and left to compost. These will be taken to my new home to distribute in a new area. The pool and deck were free but I wasn’t giving away my organic materials.

Anyway, back to more freebies.

At times during the summer I love to grill pineapple. Slice however you want but leave it at least on half inch thick and sprinkle with cinnamon. Then place directly above the heat of your grill. The sugars caramelize when grilling and oh my, it is delectable. All you need then is some pound cake to place it on and vanilla ice cream to go over the top while its hot. Sorry, drifting here...I am also hungry now!

So, in the process of peeling the pineapple, I have removed the tops leaving about one half inch of the top intact. I usually pot them up and keep as an ornamental. They are beautiful as they grow and I've heard tell, that they'll eventually produce another fruit. I don’t have photos available at this time so I will have to search for them and post another day. Here is a forum @rocklady started back in April '12: The thread "Rooting a pineapple" in Grow a Pineapple Plant

Now, I've not had any luck in the pineapple fruiting department and so after keeping one for three years it was discarded into my composting pile. I had believed it decomposed and processed until Sunday when I was bagging up the leaves. It seems the top had broken down almost completely with exception to about a 1.5" cube. The cube had 4 pineapple plant seedlings growing from it. These were quickly removed, potted separately in the own containers and given a good drink of water. They will be kept indoors in a sunny window until spring. They are really susceptible to the cold so come on spring. I seem to be batting a thousand here in the photo department. I will get some pictures later to share.

Don’t you just love volunteers and freebies. I know I sure do...

Wishing you all an early, but a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year too. I hope you all will be as blessed as I am.
Stan
