aspenhill's blog: Off Season Musings - Garden Areas (Side Yard Spring Bulb Bed)

Posted on Dec 27, 2015 1:23 AM

After planning and planting this bed in the fall of 2014, I was anxious to see how it would work out this past spring. Wonder of wonders, the tulips actually bloomed when the weeping cherry did. Admittedly is was only a two day overlap and at the fleeting end of the cherry blossoms, but still... The overlap with the redbud was at least two weeks though. All in all, I was very happy with the results. I'm not sure how old the weeping cherry is, but it is a sight to see in its maturity. Maybe this winter I'll find the receipt when I continue the endless quest to organize my garden notes. The little new redbud looks like a dwarf in comparison, but give it time. The garden seemed to be missing something, and it was Mike's idea to relocate a curved grey concrete bench from another garden area. It looks much better in its new location under the cherry tree and gives me a nice place to sit and enjoy the surroundings.

By the time I got all those tulip bulbs planted last fall, it was pretty late in the season and I didn't get a chance to mulch. This spring and summer, I had lots of gardening help from Mike's brothers and sister. They helped me mulch and edge this Spring Bulb Bed while the tulips were still in bloom. Really turned out nice.
