LysmachiaMoon's blog: Snow-blivion

You know it is really snowing hard when the automated radar reports "Dense Fog" instead of snow. We got a total of about 32 inches from Jonas. Gusty winds, but nothing too bad. It was very dry powdery snow so it did drift a lot. Looking out my back door, I have a fairly big mugho pine that was nearly flattened under snow, then there's a gap of about 6 feet for a pathway, then a big clump of very large juniper. There is a drift of snow from the Juniper to the pine, completely filling the pathway...and that drift is about even with my head...over 5 feet tall. My front yard is one big drift... I stepped off the bottom of the deck steps to make my way to the garden shed on Sunday morning and sank in up to my hips. *LOL*

Nothing really exciting happened; the power went out around 3 p.m. on Saturday at the height of the storm and me and R looked at each other and said simultaneously. "We're in big trouble now." Of course, being the responsibl adults we are, we had a backup kerosene heater that we purchased 2 years ago...sitting in the basement still in the box. It took us 2 hours to get it unpacked, assembled, filled, and figure out how to light the darn thing. Just when we got it lit, the power came back on.

The worst thing of all was that one of our cats, the youngest girl Coco, who has some sort of balance problem (vet thinks either inner ear trouble or a sort of cerebral palsy), ran out in to the storm on Saturday morning and vanished. We looked, we called, we dug...no Coco. I can't tell you how horrible that was...the thought of her lying trapped under the snow or something. Finally, yesterday morning, I decided to make one more attempt to find her. I had already dug out the front of the toolshed (I knew she sometimes hid under there), but yesterday, I dug out the back. And out she came...starved, thirsty, and very very scared. Thank goodness I did get that spot dug out. It wasn't easy, the drift against the back of the shed was about 3 feet tall and very wide. But once I saw her, it was like a great weight was lifted. I finally was able to sleep last night! I kept thinking that it would be awful to wait for the thaw and find her poor little body...

We had a man come by with a big truck and a plow blade and push a way clear through our driveway. I have mountains of snow piled up everywhere. He ran the truck over part of my newly planted driveway bed...I am hoping not too much damage since he did not scrape the plow blade over it, just ran over it. Can't complain though...I was stranded until he opened up the driveway.

Our telephone line went down on Saturday and we just now got it back on. So nice to have service again, and internet service too.
