LysmachiaMoon's blog: Suddenly looking forward to spring

Posted on Jan 29, 2016 8:59 AM

The first day of spring (Feb. 2) is coming up less than a week and I got up this morning and *Presto!* suddenly I was looking forward to spring. There's a change in the air, in the light. There's still snow on the ground in heaps, it's still very cold, but it's there...that ineffable sense that things are moving. The maple trees have all suddenly covered themselves in fat bright red buds, the birds are starting to tentatively sing a bit as the sun comes up.

This year will be the year of the Veg. I let the veg garden go pretty badly in 2014 and 2015 and my shelves are proof: I'm down to the last few jars of tomato sauce and green beans and saurkraut. Also running out of onions and fairly low on potatoes. I think that having the underground fencing around the veg perimeter to deter groundhogs will be key to making me love my veg again. 2014 was terrible; that *$**!!*#! got in, tunneled in, dug a huge den and devastated the whole garden inside of a week. I finally got rid of him but it took nearly a year and 2015 I was so traumatized I got my garden off to a very late start and did not plant as much as I usually do.

I got an email from Jung's seeds that my order is on the way! Yay! Now the problem is sitting on my hands so that I don't rush things and start the seeds too early! Just a few more weeks...

I think I might start digging out the pots and trays etc this weekend so I can give everything a good soak and scrub. Also should check the supply of starting compost....

The snow is melting very nicely; it may be possible to get up to the StoryBook garden today. I was thinking that having a blank white cover over everything is a good thing...I can tramp out the outlines of new beds in the Dark Garden and do some measurements and lay out the paths...like drawing on a life size piece of paper!

I really DO have to have some sort of a plant sale this spring. I've got an awful lot of plants from the "rescue garden" (that abandoned garden at the mobile home park) and they are taking up a lot of room in the veg.
