Seedfork's blog: Trip to Lowe's for Roses

Posted on Feb 1, 2016 10:49 PM

Well today I made a trip to the bank and stopped by Lowe's to get some roses... no I did not need to take out a loan to buy the roses.
I was up there a few days ago and took photos of six rose selections, but with my old flip phone I could not make out the names. Any how I did look up Floribunda and Grandiflora and hybrid tea to refresh my memory.
As I was looking at the new roses trying to decide which ones to buy (I had determined I wanted at least four and would prefer six) the lady working in the gardening department told me they just marked down a big table of roses 90%. What....90%? Well, I doubted there would be anything over there I was interested in and they would be half dead anyhow. But the reduced price was something I naturally could not refuse to wander over and check out. Wow, at first they looked pretty pathetic, and nearly all of them were single Knockout roses. But there were two tables and the Knockouts were previously reduced by 50 % and had really been picked over, but by now people were gathering around and they started flying off the table. The large table next to them had mostly Kordes roses and had not been marked down, and a couple of people said they did not think they were included in the 90% markdown, so everyone just ignored them. Then the gardening department lady walked by and I asked her and she said "yes, they are all 90% off". Now they were not the very best looking roses, but darned good looking at that price.
I picked out seven nice looking plants, my total for the seven roses with tax and all was under $10.00 total!
I meant to take photos of all of them but somehow failed to snap a photo of a hybrid tea rose: Tropicana. I did get them all planted after digging all the flowers (mostly Iris) out of one of my beds to make room for the four Kordes roses, the other three I planted in one of my rose beds where three older ones had been. I managed to give a wheelbarrow load of Iris to my neighbor, still have a wheelbarrow load left to do something with.
