LysmachiaMoon's blog: A mixed bag of precip

We are receiving what the weather forecasters like to call "A Mixed Bag of precipitation" in other words, you name it, we got it falling from the skies: Snow, rain, sleet, freezing rain...I'm afraid to say there's no hail in case somebody up there gets ideas.

What a dreary day! The only good thing is that the temperature is slowly rising above freezing (it stands at 34F right now) so we should see some thawing. There's a light ice coating on all my trees; if the sun would come out, it would be a fairy land out there. As it is now, just dreary.

The brightest spot in the whole house is my office. I have an old kitchen table set up near the south facing window and have a big assortment of tender plants on it. Everything is in bloom! Yellow cannas, various pelargoniums. It is SO NICE to see some green and color.

Well, in another month or 6 weeks, suddenly it will be green outside again. And then the real work of the garden starts. My friend E offered to bring over her chainsaw and help me fell the remains of the cherry tree....I turned her down at the time, but now I'm having second thoughts. It sure would save a lot of time and with the bad weather we've been having, I'm getting well behind in the list of things I'd like to have done before the warm weather comes back.

The upcoming week/weekend is supposed to be very mild, with temps in the 50sF. I am putting getting in more horse manure at the top of the list. I know the riding stables will appreciate getting rid of the stuff and I can use all I can lay my hands on.

I've been trying to think of a good place to make a sort of "depot" for things like mulch, manure, compost. I think I've settled on a spot at the south east corner of the veg., right at the edge of the South Border. That's a fiddly spot to mow and I have been meaning to move the edge of the South Border out further so this might be good spot. The only downside is the darn "swale" or "berm" which makes it a bit tricky to back the truck in. Still, I think it might work. The plus side is it's almost exactly central to the whole property, so that would make distributing the stuff a lot more sensible.

Right now, I'm piling up the horse manure under my Liberty apple tree, which is behind the tool shed. I'm hoping to kill off what's left of the grass under the tree and put in a neatly edged mulch bed there. It's just too difficult to get the lawn mower under there. If I do that, it will also provide a natural segue into a new bed I'm planning, that will run along the outside of the west side of the veg. That's where I'm hoping to put my dahlia collection.

Well, better get some office work done. The clients are starting to squeal....
