Man, what a difference a day makes. Yesterday we were under tornado warnings, the wind was howling, the thunder and lighting flashing. Today, clear blue skies, short sleeved shirt weather, and feels like a beautiful spring day. We only ended up with two more inches of rain, I was needing just about that much to settle a couple of areas I worked and added compost to, so that was just perfect.
I have had a very good rate of germination of my early tomato 'Sweetie', the later varieties are starting to show, but they are way behind. Seems the very early tomatoes love the cooler weather to germinate in, and the later varieties love to have warmer temps.
So there were a few little cells of 'Sweetie' that looked large enough for their first transplant, and I really enjoyed mixing up the soil and being out in the wonderful weather and doing something that felt like real gardening.
Here is the bed I spread a layer of compost over. The compost was not nearly as far along as I expected it to be by this time of year, and it was simply because there was almost no nitrogen source in the making of it. It was really more akin to a leaf mold pile than actual compost. But, I figure by the time I spread out some fertilizer on it , and it gets a few good rains and the worms work it, the plants will do alright.
I finally have a different variety of daffodil blooming. They are just starting to open, and they are right at the base of the back stairs so I get to get a good look at them during the day.
This is a photo of the tiny little 'Sweetie' tomato seedlings. I put them one to the pot, and then placed the transplanted ones out in the cold frame. The others I brought back inside and put under the lights again. Should be more ready to transplant in a few more days.
Here are some of the ones after transplanting and being moved to the cold frame. I put the plastic cover over them for the night.
