LysmachiaMoon's blog: First germination

Posted on Feb 18, 2016 7:20 AM

The Fielderkraut seeds finally germinated...yesterday 3 healthy little seedlings, today about 4-5 more. They've been sitting there for well over a week, so I'm relieved to see them!
The big surprise was the cabbage/broccoli seeds I planted on Sunday...it's only Thursday and they are all up except for the Ballhead (which I recall had poor germination last year) and the Brussel sprouts. Good thing I checked...I have the trays up on top of my cupboards where it's warm and dark. I have to be careful to move them to the light as soon as the seeds germinate or else end up with weird otherworldly looking legging things. So, that tray is now on the kitchen sink soaking up the sunshine. Which...we actually have today! It's a cold brilliantly clear day here. I've got tons of laundry to hang out on the line, then once it warms up a bit, I'm hoping to pick up the saw and loppers and do some much needed pruning and cutting around the place. I never did finish up the pruning on the lilacs that I started back in December. My Cinder cat passed away then and I just never could go back and finish that job. Then the snow came and put paid to that. I think the area is still snow covered, but I've got plenty else I can do with loppers and saw.

Filled up more flats for the tomato seeds. I've got those flats in the kitchen warming up to room temperature. I'll seed them on Sunday.

Need to seriously start thinking about what goes where. I've got several different varieties of morning glory seeds and I'd like to showcaswe them somewhere but haven't a clue where. Also, I have GOT to find/make/abscond with some sorts of trellis/arches for the various clematis and other vines I want to grow this year. If my little hop vine made it through the winter, it's probably going to need something big and sturdy to climb on this year. I've got a lot of old sheep fencing laying around; I think I might be able to do something with that. I should probly ask J. if that abandoned mobile home is still untouched...he told me last fall that I could salvage the landscape timbers that were used to edge flower beds. I took home about 8 of them but now I regret not taking a lot more (there were probably 30-40) They would make good sturdy poles for vines to climb.
