What a beautiful weekend we were given here in the Florida Panhandle.
And, so it begins...
Saturday was spent raking leaves and building new flower beds. I spent about an hour raking and then I elected to use the mower. Where, they were shredded and captured in the bag. I scattered them in the surrounding trees around the property but, a few were added to the composter of course.
When all the leaves were taken care of, work began on one of several planned bedding areas in the front yard. Below are a couple of shots that were taken. In the first picture you will notice a bed on the right side. Planted in it are 2 different Caladium, Lilies of the Valley, 2 different Astilbe and some Elephant ears. Hope they all come up soon. I did notice some emerging growth on the Astilbe but somehow didn't take a picture. Maybe I'll take a few after they are growing a little more. Sure hope they all do well here with the heat of our summer. Also at some point, I will add hosta's and a couple bleeding hearts that are growing in pots. On the left you will see the beginnings of the bed for some of the potted daylily's. I am considering other accompanying plants, like Liriope, perhaps Aztec for a variegated contrast to the Lily's green foliage. Or, something similar. The second picture is just a little closer look.
Here are those,
Bleeding Heart
I added some amendments to the soil after relocating the grass to other areas with bare spots. Below you will see the amendments added. I really like the Sta-Green garden soil. It’s a darn good mix IMHO and have used it in most of the potted daylily's. This mix has rich soil along with some sand and pine fines mixed in it. Also added several bags of mushroom compost and about 1/2 bag of alfalfa pellets to the entire bed. Also sprinkled in were several cups of Milorganite, before it was all turned by hand with a turning fork. The curved bed is about 30 foot long and about 4 feet in the widest area.I really need to invest in a rototiller. Btw, the pictures only show when I started adding the amendments.
Some are hard dormant and are just waking from their resting period. But, here are a few of my potted Daylily's.
Friday night the bunny buffet was open again, and here's the evidence. This was after sprinkling a couple tablespoons of Milorganite to all the pots earlier that day. I guess this guy was just to hungry to mind the smell. Although, it did seem to curve its appetite as this is the only one chewed on.
Below is the 'Cluster Muster' x 'Prairie Wild Fire' seedling that was chewed on quite a few times in the past. That is before I moved it to the top shelf of a plant stand I made a couple years ago. Also beside it are a few other seedlings I have. The picture of the long window box has more 'Prairie Wild Fire' cross, seedlings. I love that Red CV.
Not to be forgotten are a few things being assembled for the transformation of the back yard. I plan to have some Carolina and Confederate Jasmine trained along the chained link fence at some point. Not pictured is the confederate.
Also scored a couple of the Black Diamond series Crape Myrtles on clearance, one white and the other a blush.
