LysmachiaMoon's blog: Scything

Decided to get out my scythe and have a go at the big patch of monster grass up by the hen house. I'm definitely still learning. But I am starting to understand the tool and I think with practice I'll be ok with it. It's dry and windy today, so not good scything conditions (you're supposed to cut when the grass is full of moisture and dew), but at least I got out and did some cutting. I'm still having trouble getting a nice even cut and I wander all over the place like a drunken sailor. I would love to find a workshop where I could get some hands-on instruction.... In the meantime, I intend to keep cutting. I have a feeling that once I stop trying I'll do better "use the force....."

So COLD it's unbelievable. Into the 20sF again last night and now the wind is kicking up again. We really need some mild RAINY weather. I think I may put in a few more hours at my desk, then drive up to "the mountain" and get some compost from the township's pile. I just feel like I've been stuck indoors too much lately. It felt so good to be out cutting grass with the scythe and working up a "dew". (Horses sweat, men perspire, ladies merely dew...)
