LysmachiaMoon's blog: Hostas into the Stumpery

Planted some hostas in the Stumpery! *yay*! Two Blue Mammoth, one Zeppelin, and one Earth Angle. I was pleased to see that a hosta (don't remember what it was) that I put in last fall is up and growing there too. Today, I'd like to put my Empress Wu hosta in pride of place down there and maybe put in some of the ferns that a friend gave me last fall....those have been in the veg over the winter and I'm not sure if they made it thru the winter or not. One is certainly alive...I'm hoping the others are just fully dormant because of all the cold/dry weather we've been having.

I'm absolutely SWAMPED with editing work this week and next but I am bound and determined to get out and do my gardening. Ive been trying to take "breaks" from the office by going out and doing just one thing...better than sitting down and eating or pottering around the house. This is where my egg timer really comes in handy....I set it for 45 minutes and get to work in the garden. When it rings, back in the house I go. This really works well for me....I don't end up moving from project to project and then finding out I've been in the garden 3 hours.

There is just SO MUCH I want to do around here and there's never enough time or enough "me" to go around! Yesterday, while walking over to E's house it came to me that the perfect solution would be to build a glass house/greenhouse onto the existing garden shed. The shed sits outside the Veg, with about a 4 foot paved "gap" between the side of shed and the Veg garden fence. If i could remove that side of the shed, extend the roof a bit, then set the greenhouse so it extended INTO the Veg garden, it would work perfectly. I could put in access doors so I could walk through the shed into the greenhouse, into the garden and vice versa. I think it would be just the size I could manage too. The problems are (1) convincing R that this can be done (he will come up with a million reasons why it can't even be attempted (2) finding the time to do it. E says my first step is to get a really good set of plans drawn up so that R can't pick the idea apart on that score.....

Pennsylvania has just passed legislation to legalize medical marijuana. I am very glad and proud that our state legislators are open-minded and compassionate. E's husband has recently been diagnosed with Trigeminal Neuralgia, which is an extremely painful nerve disorder of the face. He has been having some side effect issues with the medication he is taking (there is no real cure...and the pain is terrible...the suicide rate in people with TN is much higher than average). His doctor has suggested medical marijuana as a possibility, but until this law is finalized he's going to have to wait. A lot of people don't realized that the "medical" part of the marijuana is separate from the "fun" part....you can use extracts of marijuana for their medicinal properties without ever getting "high." (although why that would be a bad thing.... Er....never mind...)
