LysmachiaMoon's blog: A pause for suppurating lesions

Ah the joys of life with pets, hens, and gardens. One thing is certain: You handle a lot of...well...*excrement*. And when you also happen to stick your finger with a rose thorn or something and don't realize it (what kind of sissy baby gardener notices a jab in the finger???) and your finger swells to twice its size and turns purple...well, it gets attention. And a visit to Urgent Care. And a course of antibiotics. And a tetanus shot. *sigh*

So I've been on the Injured Reserved list for the past 2 days, with a boo-boo ouchy that won't let me do much. It is getting much better though. At least people don't recoil in horror when they see it.

Yesterday, I got my second lesson in bee keeping from Julie. (I showed her the boo-boo and she told me I need to see a doctor. Right away. Then we went on with the bee keeping. We're countrywomen. We're practical. Sometimes foolhardy, but practical.) I wish I had the time/money to keep bees. Her 3 hives are doing well, very calm (Julie is a calm person and I'm so calm sometimes people hold a mirror beneath my nostrils to test for life). It was very pleasant and we traded plants too...I gave her some daylilies and sedums, she gave me a nice fennel plant.

This morning, despite rain and the bad finger, I was able to get the first lower "layer" of chicken wire up on the hen run. I still need to put up the second upper layer (can't do that in the rain) and then put a "roof" of wire over the top. Then remove the cover from the front of the rabbit hutch that will now be a second little hen house, clean out the hutch, build a ladder so the ladies can get up into it, and then hang the new door on the hen run. Then clean out the hen house and we're done. If the weather clears up, I should be able to tackle some of that tomorrow. It sounds like a lot more work than it is.

I have been able to do some light weeding here and there, and everything is starting to bloom so everything looks lovely. The veg is still dreadfully behind; I need to get more beans in the ground! I'm going to direct seed some fall cabbage and see how that goes. I was going to get my tomatoes in the Aux today but it's too wet. My claggy clay soil is unworkable.
