LysmachiaMoon's blog: Plant sale success

The plant sale that my friend E and I put together on Saturday was a success...we netted almost $200! This is really good, considering that we forgot to put out flyers advertising the sale...they only went up in a few local grocery stores on Friday afternoon. So, no advertising to speak of. We put up road signs early Saturday morning and I honestly thought we'd be lucky if anyone stopped by. But we had a crowd and most of our plants were sold.

The bestest and most wonderfulest suprise was a visit from 2 fellow site members, Aspenhill and Backward Glance (ecnalg). It was such a delight to meet them in person and show them around the garden. They were more than kind in their comments (thank you!) and my only regret was that it was such a hectic time I wasn't able to give them lunch or even coffee. Thanks for making such a long drive to visit!

I have to confess that the run up to the sale, the sale day, and the cleanup/aftermath, all in the hot humid sunshine, really wore me out. I spent Saturday afternoon on the couch in my office, watching YouTube and sipping cold tea. Sunday was another steambath; I only got up enough gumption to do a little pottering around in the garden for an hour in the morning. Spent the rest of the day indoors working on my editing projects.

Last night we got rain and much cooler temps, and this morning was heavy overcast and cool. So I decided to finally get cracking on that bed that I wanted to put in along the back fence of the veg garden. I'm hoping to make it my "old roses" bed....I bought 3 species roses at a sale a few weeks back (Rosa virginiana, R. palustris, and R. rugosa) and they really needed to get into the ground. Almost got the whole bed (4 x 40 feet) finished before the sun came out and it got too warm to work. I also planted the canna bulbs and the remaining dahila bulbs in that bed, as well as a pot of catmint and a pot of Goatsbeard that have been languishing in the nursery since last fall. There's still a strip of grass about 5 feet long to be lifted out before the bed is finished. I'll try to get to that this evening when it's cooler. Over time, I'll probably gradually widen the bed to about 5 feet, but at least this gets it started and gets things in the ground.

The next major "project" is the veg garden. It's a mess. I used several of the beds as holding areas for the many Plant Sale plants and between that and neglected weeding...oh dear. It's going to take a few days to get it in any sort of order again.

Now that the sale is behind me, I can start concentrating on the garden again. One lesson I learned: don't put off potting up stuff for sale. I made a good start last winter, then slacked off and so had to really scramble the last week before the sale. I'm going to try to pot things up a little at a time, over the course of a year, for the next sale. I also need to find a better holding area; it seemed like a good idea to keep everything in the veg, but it used up too much space and threw my veg planting time way off. I think using the grassy area behind the Pond Circle might be better...I'm hoping to replace the grass with groundcover eventually so it won't hurt if it gets smothered out.
