LysmachiaMoon's blog: Beautiful Weekend on Tap

It looks like it's going to be a nice weekend for some morning/evening gardening and I'm hoping to really tear into the veg and get it back under control. So far, I've got a lot of the weeds out; I still need to finish weeding, do some late planting, and most important: Clean up a couple of beds that are still a mess from being used as nursery beds for the Plant Sale in May. There are still plants in those beds; not sure if I should pot them up or just leave them. At this time of year, probably best to leave them in place.

I've also got to start making notes of what needs to be divided/moved/etc. I've finally got enough of the very very old variety of iris 'Gracchus' to divide and either sell or relocate. These are the little yellow with purple/brownish falls.

I was very disappointed to find out that the single rhizome of a strange little iris I gathered from my family church cemetery in Johnstown PA did not survive. There were two odd varieties growing on some very old graves and I gathered a couple rhizomes from each. One is a dark variation on a more common antique iris (can't remember the name...); I have the lighter variety and the difference is very noticeable. The darker one sure is appropriate to graveyards! The one that was lost is lost forever. I went back to the cemetery a few weeks ago and it is no longer there. I think the ground crews are systematically removing all the live plants that are growing on very old (abandoned) graves. I might try going down into the woods below the cemetery next May and seeing if by some miracle they dumped the iris roots there. At any rate; this is heartbreaking because it was such an unusual color. A sort of faded silvery gold, like very old yellowed silk.

On a brighter note, a pot of clematis that I thought was dead is growing nicely! *yay!* I'm going to let it grow a bit more before I set it out in it's permanent location. I'm not sure just now what the variety is (got it at a clearance sale and I've seen that a lot of the tags were incorrect. I bought a few things that were marked as ferns and came up astilbles!)

The Jungle Cliff is coming along. I filled the pond this morning; have to remember to put a big rock or log in it for safety. I don't want any little one falling in and not being able to climb out. This is another reason why I don't want overhanging rocks around the edge. Too dangerous.

The daylilies are just starting to bloom. My old fashioned H. fulva are open and my old yellow variety is coming into full bloom too. This yellow variety was given to me by a friend who got his from his grandfather's garden in Mississippi. He claims this is the elusive "Lemon Lily" but I am not sure if it is that or the old Hyperion. It has a wonderful fragrance.

Well, back to work. Several office projects that need mopping up over the weekend.
