Seedfork's blog: Job finished 07-27-2016

For the past couple of weeks I have been hauling compost down to the bog bed trying to get it looking presentable and keep it from looking like and being a mud puddle. I had a huge compost pile (mostly just leaves but some grass clippings).
Some parts of the pile were very dry and some parts of the pile had become excellent soil additive. I made many trips down to the bog with the wheelbarrow and now that pile is completely gone. My plan was to do this job in Oct. when it was cooler, but I needed something to do, and the pile really needed turning, so moving it did the job. This was probably the worst compost pile I have ever made (did not turn or water like I should have). But now I am at the stage where that is not so important to me. It is all organic material and will decay. The chief purpose of this pile was to build up the height of the soil so I was not standing in water. It certainly improved the looks of the bog beds also.
I have to admit, that this is not the most beautiful mulch material but it is very effective for keeping the root zone cool, and the weeds down (not all the weeds, but the great majority). Of course as I mow and weedeat, and as the leaves decay and become part of the soil, those seeds I scatter will land and start to grow. Then it will time to mulch again.
So soon it will be time to start gathering more leaves and grass, fall is not that far away. Now I have this nice vacant area to work with.
