Seedfork's blog: Photos of planted daylilies 09-17-2016

I took photos today of my new daylilies after they were planted. What a mess these roots were tangled up in, some of them were actually pointing up instead of down. I feel the soil they were growing in must have been so compacted that the roots could not penetrate so they turned up and grew on top of each other. Of course it is possible that the plants needed to be divided so bad that the roots were just growing on top of each other. Anyhow I did the best I could with them and tried to mound the soil up over the roots without covering the crown.

I have started planting all the new arrival daylilies then putting a cage over them to keep the critters from digging them up, this has worked very well so far. I have some plants that the critters dig around almost every night and the cages have done an excellent job of protecting them. Much better doing this than trying to deal with captured critters. I just have to add more soil and compost around the plants occasionally.
Look how well this coleus is doing!
