LysmachiaMoon's blog: So very dry and way too hot

Posted on Sep 23, 2016 3:22 PM

We are desperately in need of rain and these temperatures are insane for mid-September...it reached 91F this afternoon. At least it is cooling off a lot at night, which is no surprise considering how dry everything is.

I was able to get the little stone paved walk dismantled, the PVC hose conduit laid in and the stone slabs put back in place to see how they fit. I widened the path and straightened it out a bit so I'm two stones short...I'll have to start scouting around for those, but in the meantime I'll just fill in the gaps with gravel. It got too hot to keep working, so the stones are in place but I haven't leveled them or "grouted" them with gravel yet. That will probably wait til tomorrow morning or even next week when it's supposed to be cooler. The thought of hauling gravel from my little pile down by the woods up to the path is not a happy thought!

This afternoon, despite the heat, I did get another section of the Storybook Garden weeded...the Rock Garden, which is really looking very nice (but wilted!). I found yet MORE forsythia that need to be dug out and put up for sale in the spring. I'm trying to figure out a way to dig and store them over the winter so that I don't have to do that in the spring, when it's so busy with other things. But, at the same time, I do NOT want to heel them into a temporary bed, which would have to be in the veg and I'm desperate to get the veg totally cleared out. I also don't want to have to pot them up (too much work and compost!). So I'm considering just digging them up, wrapping the roots in cloth (I have an enormous amount of old heavy linen from our deck awning over the years...yards and yards of the stuff), then laying them down in neat rows along the OUTSIDE back fence of the veg and covering the roots with mulch/compost. I'm thinking that would keep them well protected during the winter and in the spring, I should be able to just lift them out and send them to their new homes. Anyways, that's the plan... nothing can be done right now. The soil is like concrete.

Well, it's officially the weekend and I'm going to sit down to something cool to drink and make up a list of things I'd like to get done around here the next couple days.
