LysmachiaMoon's blog: Detour

Like so many things with my garden, yesterday I had intended to do some serious planting and maybe get the pond drained. Instead...a detour. I got a call from a woman who had loads of bagged leaves that she wanted to give me. It was a bit of a drive ...20 minutes one way...but it was a beautiful morning and I'd never been to the Penn National Golf Course where her neighborhood was located, so i went. I'm glad I did. I made two trips and got a total of about 20 bags of finely ground up leaves, pine needles, and grass clippings, all mixed up together. Very very dry though...loads of dust. And surprising, horribly heavy....I had a hard time just lifting those bags into the bed of the truck! 16 of the bags went up to the Storybook Garden, to be spread around. The remaining four went to the stumpery.

Other than haul and spread ground up leaves, that's about all I did get done yesterday, except for doing some cleanup in the Storybook Garden and a bit by the deck.

Very VERY COLD here too. It was only 22F this morning at 7 a.m. Heavy frost/freeze. With the clear nights and dry weather it's below our normal temperatures. The climate just can't seem to settle down to what it's always been. We're in the grips of a truly terrible drought...it's not being talked about on the news because at this time of the year it's not that obvious to the untrained eye...and every plant is very stressed. Most of the region's trees did not change color this fall...the leaves simply turned brown and fell off. There's no rain in the forecast for the upcoming week either. If the drought breaks in December, we'll have some snow.

I'm still watching every episode of BBC Gardener's World that I can find and I learn so much...there's so much to learn! I especially like that they visit a lot of different outstanding gardens, from grand estates to people's backyards, and I get to see the design tips and tricks that make gardens so visually interesting. of course I'm also interested in learning HOW to grow stuff, but I'm even more intrigued by the use of plant material to create beautiful spaces.

Well, I've got some editing to work on and it's still way too cold to be out there slogging around in the pond, so I think I'll settle into the office for a couple more hours, then take a stab at the pond later.
