LysmachiaMoon's blog: Officially Lost Control

Posted on May 31, 2017 6:07 AM

I dont normally lose control of the gardens until later in June/July, but I declare it official: I have lost control. Yesterday I found myself standing, secateurs in hand, staring around me with a bemused smile on face and unable to so much as snip off a dead rose head. Yes, yes....the garden has won. The green goddess is in control. There's just so much to do, and no matter what I do, it just keeps coming back. *LOL*

Got the veg weeded and mulched some things. Very disappointed in the sweet corn germination. I think that spell of cold wet weather we had after I planted it really hurt the seed. Some have come up, but mostly I'm seeing blank spaces where corn should be. Dilemma....replant the whole patch? Replant the blank spots?

My cucumbers (both slicers and pickling) were coming up nicely, but something chewed them right down to nothing...I suspect slugs or beetles. I think I'll try starting the seeds again in pots and then transplant the bigger fully leafed out seedlings to the Earth Boxes. This is the first time I've ever used the Earth Boxes and also the first time this has happened, so not very pleased with results. The carrots sown in the Earth Boxes did not come up at all. I don't know if this is the soil they are filled with (sandy compost...should be good...) or the location of the boxes (against the south fence, so a bit less sun than the open garden).

Planted most of my tomatoes, but still have about 10 plants to find homes for. Still plugging away at digging out that new bed along the front of the veg. Got a bit more done, but we have been having a lot of rain and it's very muddy work...heavy!

Sunshine this morning, after early morning rain showers, so I may be out there by mid-morning trying to do something. Everything is so dripping wet it's hard to get much done, but I am not complaining. My biggest fear (echoed by every gardener in the area that I know) is that after this wet spell it will just forget how to rain and we'll not see a drop until autumn.

I still need to get wood chip mulch...I want to finish that new path and I want to mulch around some plantings to *she gives a hollow laugh* keep down the weeds....
