LysmachiaMoon's blog: Where the heck is everybody?

Hello? *knocks on computer screen* Is anybody out there? *LOL* Where the heck is everybody? We can't ALL have given up gardening at once!

***

Major score: I've been plugging away at my editing work all week, because it's too depressingly hot and dry to be outside and I've got deadlines coming out my ears. But this morning, something green inside me rebelled.... I shut down the laptop, got in the truck, and headed south. Stopped at Lovell's nursery and wow, they had a sale on....buy 3 marked perennials (quart pots), get one free, and then also you could get 50% off on anything that was on another marked-down table (gallon pots). I bought 3 miniature hostas (1 strawberry yogurt and three of a small golden-leaved variety that I can't remember the name of) and a quart container of lemon thyme. I also bought a gallon pot of a variety of autumn fern that gets (and keeps) orange-tinted leaves. The whole lot cost me only a little over $20. Then, on a hunch, I drove to the Lowe's in Hagerstown and wow...jackpot. They were clearing out their racks to make room for the autumn mums and there were tons of "distressed plants" on deep discount. Most of those were annuals that I did not want, but I did get 5 gallon pots of Montauk daisies for....$1.50 each! They are in very very good shape, the leaves green and full, just the flowering stalks are finished. I also got a very sad looking autumn fern (green variety) for $1.50 and a huge palm tree for only $3 (normally $20)...I just couldn't pass it up, not at that price. I think it will look spectacular in the stumpery for the end of this year and then I'll move it into the office for winter. I also bought another mini hosta and another autumn fern at full price (which was still very cheap...$4 each). So, for pennies on the dollar, I've got a lot of nice plant material. The ferns and hostas will all go in the Jungle Cliff/Deck Steps garden. The daisies will go in the driveway bed, the thyme into the steep rock border along the house-side of the deck steps and the palm tree into the stumpery. (I've got to find a big pot for the palm, obviously...palm trees dont' grow out the ground in Pennsylvania...not yet at any rate.)

We're forecast to have cooler temps starting tomorrow (still no rain forecast), so I'm hoping to spend this weekend really tearing into some projects. I'm watering the garden in sections (today was the entrance to the Fairy Glen), and I made up my mind to take advantage of the dry weather to get the greenhouse plastic replaced, build a gate for the new opening into the veg, maybe pour some more WalkMaker concrete slabs, etc. I'd also like to empty out the tool shed and maybe get the floor painted, but that might be more than I can manage. We'll see. All I need is cooler temps and a good night's sleep!
