bloominholes2fill's blog: Winter Has Overstayed It's Welcome!

Posted on Apr 16, 2018 10:27 AM

Okay, this unwelcome, frigid Spring weather has been the complaint for us Northerners, this year! It's not too unusual to see snow, even into April 20th or so. This has been a very unusual Spring, as in, according to the weather guy, 2018 is the 6th Spring, in the last 100 years, to have temps averaging at 40 degrees or below! Blinking The last of which was 1995! So Winter will not be kicked to the curb for the year, quite yet! Blinking Glare Glare So our Spring temperatures have been hovering around 15 degrees below normal, as an average, this year. Blinking

Currently it's cloudy with light rain and 37 degrees. Winds sustained out of the WSW at 12 mph. Wind gusts around 20 mph with wind chills of about 29 degrees. Blinking Blinking Today's high is expected to reach 41 degrees. A 30% chance of 1/10 of an inch of showers after 3pm. Tonight 50% chance of precipitation, beginning with rain before 10pm, then rain/snow mix, then snow showers after 1am. Low around 31 degrees, with W winds around 10 to 13 mph. Snow accumulation of less than 1/2 inch possible.

Just Saturday and Sunday, I was wearing shorts!! Blinking

Daytime temps will be rising slowly by the end of the week, with night time temps near or in the 40's Hurray! Hurray! , and next week is looking promising, but only time will tell!

Last week was mild, more Spring-like weather, and I was able to get outside and do some cleanup, weeding, and redefine the border and edging around the old tree garden. Jasper supervised by chasing leaves and flies, stalking birds and squirrels, and doing his "fly-by's", as I call them (from the movie "Top Gun"), where he'll come running by me all crooked-like, with his tail contorted! He tickles my funny bone! Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing Friday, we reached 80 degrees Hurray! and I was able to finally fertilize the evergreens! Hurray! Hurray! We found out that the local landscape/hard scape company no longer takes yard waste, and we don't have the room for a sizable composting area. Sad I may expand mine, but we'll still need a place to take the excess. So the hunt begins. Glare Glare

The winter sown seeds, in jugs and in the gardens, have not been showing any signs of life, until I noticed an itty bitty sprout in one of the Allium varieties, on Friday! Hurray! Last week I was able to keep the jugs open in the daytime for the nice warm sun. Now, I'm hoping the near freezing temps today, and every night this week, won't kill the little guy, but I'm told Allium are pretty tough, and of course, the jugs are closed. Crossing Fingers! Crossing Fingers!

Our trees aren't leafing out yet, and the flowering trees aren't blooming either. Sad We were in Pittsburgh, two weeks ago, and the Dogwoods were blooming there. Smiling Here's to hoping things will turn around here soon! Crossing Fingers! Crossing Fingers!

Apparently, an asteroid passed between earth and the moon, yesterday, which is considered a very close pass! Pretty cool, and a bit scary all at the same time! Blinking
