microb's blog: More rain and road repairs

What a year. At last 4 more inches of rain Saturday night. Really scary heavy stuff. My trip to deliver Heliconia roots to Mary Beth was delayed an hours as heavy showers were still passing through. Got on the road Sunday morning, first stop was the farmers market for veggies and salad makings. About a mile from the market the rain really let loose. Must have almost taken the paint off the van. Then it stopped as fast as it started. Market was just a light mist.
Second stop was to take a bird cage down to a friend. She could not get the cage in her car when she picked up her bird earlier in the week was took one of our smaller ones. Her home was overrun by lava so she is renting from who ever she can. Her current house was accessed through a dark tunnel of trees, a bit creepy. Did the cage exchange and moved off to find Mary Beths house. Arrived and unloaded the Heliconia and started to bag up the cinder soil from the truck load she had delivered. After all the rain it was more like cinder mud but it will work. And the then the rain started. "Lets shelter on the back Lanai" said Mary Beth. Just made it before the deluge, and then the wind started up. For about 15 minutes it was like living in a Hurricane. We were forced to the back of the lanai as the rain blew sideways over the barbeque and furniture, trees were whipping back and forth and then it stopped as fast as it started. Quite and experience.
Finished bagging the soil. Had a tour of the garden to see where the Hapuu ferns had been located that I traded a weeks or so ago and left with some black Ti cuttings and a dendrobium orchid. I think we are even on our bartering at this point. I'm sure we will cross paths again with other trades.
Some regular gardening work over Monday and Tuesday. For me that clearing forest and trimming trees. The area inside the duck yard (2 old Muscovy males reside there) is getting overgrown so I plan to do some radical trimming and move their fencing so they have a small space (they are old and I need more yard space).
Replanted a kitchen Terrarium yesterday and trimmed the bouganvillia over the ice chest pond on the front driveway. The yellow candle tree is blooming but the weight of leaves caused a small branch to fall off so that got pushed into the ground over the other side of the bridge. Added a wheelbarrow full of gravel to the path approaching the bridge, and put some gravel on the bridge so that the wheelbarrow does not have to bump up the edge of the 2 inch boards that cross the bridge to accommodate the post. Overall things are looking pretty good in the bridge vicinity.

Today I started out with a major session with my chain saw. Cut down two new bamboo shoots that had emerged too close to our water tank. Each about 4 inches across. Trimmed some trees in the forest on this side of the stream, just odds and ends I had missed before and then moved across the bridge to cut down a fallen clump of trees that was across a pig fence. Many of the trees to be cut were at shoulder height. I completed wacked myself out Lots of clean up left to do.

Took a much needed shower to get rid of the saw dust. Next job was to wash off the cage that I collected on Sunday and then decided to rake up bamboo leaves, put them in a 50lb dog food bag, carry them out to the forest and pack the mulch around the smaller bamboo plants. The lattice "fences" to contain the mulch had been put in place about a week ago. Found out that one bag of mulch will only provide mulch for 2 plants and I have 30 to do. So that will be an on going project. I found out that I was more wacked out than I thought after the chain saw session so might not get anything else done today.
Edit - Forgot to mention that county was back today to fix the road. We must be the most maintained road on the island. More rain forecast for Friday and Saturday so maybe we will see them again next week
Review the photos and not sure I should have posted the of the hired contractor on the bridge but I decided to leave it there anyway - anything to raise a smile.
