ge1836's blog: right side up

Posted on Jun 26, 2012 5:42 AM

<p>O K Right side up.I forgot how challenging it is to paint at this time of year. There are "crawlbacks" because the damp paper doesnt absorb the water. Now I have some scrubbing to do.<br /> <a href="http://cubits.org/pics/2012-06-26/ge1836/0d3ab1.jpg" class="lightbox"><img class="thumb" src="http://cubits.org/pics/2012-06-26/ge1836/0d3ab1-250.jpg" alt="Thumb of 2012-06-26/ge1836/0d3ab1" /></a></p>
<p> </p>
<p>Its diffacult to see the drawing on the rest of the paper which makes the composition look wierd.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>Its hours later and I did a bit more.</p>
<p>Just cant stay with the damp paper.Dryer trick isnt working.I will try another painting on 300 pound cold press paper.</p>
<p>I did a bit more and quit before I became so frustrated I ruined it.<br /> <a href="http://cubits.org/pics/2012-06-26/ge1836/2b9957.jpg" class="lightbox"><img class="thumb" src="http://cubits.org/pics/2012-06-26/ge1836/2b9957-250.jpg" alt="Thumb of 2012-06-26/ge1836/2b9957" /></a></p>
<p> </p>
<p>DAY 3</p>
<p>Newer painting on 300 pound cold press paper. This paper takes longer for absorption but at least there are no puddles.<br /> <br /> #3 JI's Drawing<br /> <a href="http://cubits.org/pics/2012-06-27/ge1836/3cc42f.jpg" class="lightbox"><img class="thumb" src="http://cubits.org/pics/2012-06-27/ge1836/3cc42f-250.jpg" alt="Thumb of 2012-06-27/ge1836/3cc42f" /></a><br /> <br /> First Paint<br /> <br /> <a href="http://cubits.org/pics/2012-06-27/ge1836/1ba20a.jpg" class="lightbox"><img class="thumb" src="http://cubits.org/pics/2012-06-27/ge1836/1ba20a-250.jpg" alt="Thumb of 2012-06-27/ge1836/1ba20a" /></a><br /> <br /> The large Chiyo-no haru 3rd day<br /> <a href="http://cubits.org/pics/2012-06-27/ge1836/76c935.jpg" class="lightbox"><img class="thumb" src="http://cubits.org/pics/2012-06-27/ge1836/76c935-250.jpg" alt="Thumb of 2012-06-27/ge1836/76c935" /></a></p>
<p> </p>
<p>Back at it.</p>
<p>I am going to paint out the JI'in the middle.WHAT was I thinking?<br /> <a href="http://cubits.org/pics/2012-06-27/ge1836/a5ded4.jpg" class="lightbox"><img class="thumb" src="http://cubits.org/pics/2012-06-27/ge1836/a5ded4-250.jpg" alt="Thumb of 2012-06-27/ge1836/a5ded4" />Painted out the JI shadow.I'm done for the day.<br /> </a><a href="http://cubits.org/pics/2012-06-27/ge1836/2a7296.jpg" class="lightbox"><img class="thumb" src="http://cubits.org/pics/2012-06-27/ge1836/2a7296-250.jpg" alt="Thumb of 2012-06-27/ge1836/2a7296" /></a></p>
<p> I will add a few plant forms in the background. Scrubbing is needed but gently,I dont tink the paper can take too much.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>June 28</p>
<p>When I went to the studio,I found the cat had stepped in the pallet and drank from the paint water. SOO Scrub out the black paw prints and fake it. I might need to turn the print on the white petal into a bee. NO too cutzie.<br /> <br /> <a href="http://cubits.org/pics/2012-06-28/ge1836/893fec.jpg" class="lightbox"><img class="thumb" src="http://cubits.org/pics/2012-06-28/ge1836/893fec-250.jpg" alt="Thumb of 2012-06-28/ge1836/893fec" /></a><br /> <br /> i placed cut shapes of contact paper and scrubbed against them to create a line that defines a shape.I like these plant shape shadows in the background<br /> <a href="http://cubits.org/pics/2012-06-28/ge1836/1dd6ac.jpg" class="lightbox"><img class="thumb" src="http://cubits.org/pics/2012-06-28/ge1836/1dd6ac-250.jpg" alt="Thumb of 2012-06-28/ge1836/1dd6ac" /></a><br /> Darkened the lower left corner too.<br /> <a href="http://cubits.org/pics/2012-06-28/ge1836/850bba.jpg" class="lightbox"><img class="thumb" src="http://cubits.org/pics/2012-06-28/ge1836/850bba-250.jpg" alt="Thumb of 2012-06-28/ge1836/850bba" />Sharon asked me about my contact paper mask tecnique.<br /> Here is the scoop;<br /> I use whole sheets of AVERY contact paper (the cheap stuff doesnt work )<br /> I am usually trying to bring shadows and shapes into a painting with out painting them.I already have a few layers of paint down and its dry.<br /> I draw shapes on the sheet and cut them out.I use both positive and negatives so cut carefully.<br /> </a><a href="http://cubits.org/pics/2012-06-28/ge1836/caace3.jpg" class="lightbox"><img class="thumb" src="http://cubits.org/pics/2012-06-28/ge1836/caace3-250.jpg" alt="Thumb of 2012-06-28/ge1836/caace3" /></a><a href="http://cubits.org/pics/2012-06-28/ge1836/850bba.jpg" class="lightbox"><br /> <br /> The shapes are laid on the painting in the most advantageous places,some on dark areas and some on light areas.<br /> </a><a href="http://cubits.org/pics/2012-06-28/ge1836/6af978.jpg" class="lightbox"><img class="thumb" src="http://cubits.org/pics/2012-06-28/ge1836/6af978-250.jpg" alt="Thumb of 2012-06-28/ge1836/6af978" /></a><a href="http://cubits.org/pics/2012-06-28/ge1836/850bba.jpg" class="lightbox"><br /> I use 2 different brushes and clean water.One brush is a cheap pig bristle from HD,The other is a flat 1.2 inch short watercolor brush This gives the cleanest edges.<br /> I proceed to GENTLY scrub at the edges and remove excess water with a paper towel as I work.<br /> </a><a href="http://cubits.org/pics/2012-06-28/ge1836/91f059.jpg" class="lightbox"><img class="thumb" src="http://cubits.org/pics/2012-06-28/ge1836/91f059-250.jpg" alt="Thumb of 2012-06-28/ge1836/91f059" /></a><a href="http://cubits.org/pics/2012-06-28/ge1836/850bba.jpg" class="lightbox"><br /> <br /> I also paint out areas that dont work using a positive shape and paint<br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> </a><a href="http://cubits.org/pics/2012-06-28/ge1836/5b1637.jpg" class="lightbox"><img class="thumb" src="http://cubits.org/pics/2012-06-28/ge1836/5b1637-250.jpg" alt="Thumb of href="http://cubits.org/pics/2012-06-28/ge1836/37fd8c.jpg" class="lightbox"><img class="thumb" src="http://cubits.org/pics/2012-06-28/ge1836/37fd8c-250.jpg" alt="Thumb of 2012-06-28/ge1836/37fd8c" /></a><a href="http://cubits.org/pics/2012-06-28/ge1836/850bba.jpg" class="lightbox"><br /> </a><a href="http://cubits.org/pics/2012-06-28/ge1836/0f100c.jpg" class="lightbox"><img class="thumb" Be sure to seal the edges of the contact paper or there will be bleeding under.<br /> </a><a href="http://cubits.org/pics/2012-06-28/ge1836/f0b67a.jpg" class="lightbox"><img class="thumb" src="http://cubits.org/pics/2012-06-28/ge1836/f0b67a-250.jpg" alt="Thumb of 2012-06-28/ge1836/f0b67a" /></a><a href="http://cubits.org/pics/2012-06-28/ge1836/850bba.jpg" class="lightbox"><br /> <br /> I generally wait until the contact and painting dries overnight or for a few hours but for this demo I pealed off the contact to reveal the plant shapes and shadows.<br /> I believe the edges of objects are as interesting as anyother part.<br /> </a><a href="http://cubits.org/pics/2012-06-28/ge1836/406c73.jpg" class="lightbox"><img class="thumb" src="http://cubits.org/pics/2012-06-28/ge1836/406c73-250.jpg" alt="Thumb of 2012-06-28/ge1836/406c73" /></a><a href="http://cubits.org/pics/2012-06-28/ge1836/850bba.jpg" class="lightbox"><br /> <br /> I sharpened the images and darkened where needed in a photo edit because the lighting in the studio isnt great for camera work.<br /> I believe the painting is done.Its amazing how positive an outcome there was when I made such a error to begin with.<br /> </a><a href="http://cubits.org/pics/2012-06-28/ge1836/6e07b8.jpg" class="lightbox"><img class="thumb" <p>This is a continuation of the full sheet Japanese iris.The cat walked on the part I wanted to keep white. I tried to fix it but white is white.<br /> Second stage<br /> <a href="http://cubits.org/pics/2012-06-29/ge1836/45c79a.jpg" class="lightbox"><img class="thumb" src="http://cubits.org/pics/2012-06-29/ge1836/45c79a-250.jpg" alt="Thumb of 2012-06-29/ge1836/45c79a" /></a><br /> <br /> Still going stage 3<br /> <a href="http://cubits.org/pics/2012-06-29/ge1836/25644b.jpg" class="lightbox"><img class="thumb" src="http://cubits.org/pics/2012-06-29/ge1836/25644b-250.jpg" alt="Thumb of 2012-06-29/ge1836/25644b" /></a><br /> I have the AC on to get the humidity out of the basement.</p>

<p>June 30 paintings are done</p>
<p>The paintings are done. They are drying on the deck.I draw with pencil before starting a painting and have a special eraser that will erase pencil from under the paint, but the paintings have to be dry.<br /> <a href="http://cubits.org/pics/2012-06-30/ge1836/58dcc2.jpg" class="lightbox"><img class="thumb" src="http://cubits.org/pics/2012-06-30/ge1836/58dcc2-250.jpg" alt="Thumb of 2012-06-30/ge1836/58dcc2" /></a><br /> <br /> I added a couple more iris shadows to bring intrest to the center.I thought it looked like 2 paintings in one.<br /> <a href="http://cubits.org/pics/2012-06-30/ge1836/8b580e.jpg" class="lightbox"><img class="thumb" src="http://cubits.org/pics/2012-06-30/ge1836/8b580e-250.jpg" alt="Thumb of 2012-06-30/ge1836/8b580e" /></a><br /> <br /> The Drumstick and coneflower is finished too.
