microb's blog: Not much changes

Just had a few days of dry sunny weather. Everything getting drier out and workable just in time for another rainy spell due here tomorrow and Friday.
Picked up the shadecloth for the greenhouse roof replacement and had it in place same day. Took about an hour. Since then I've been clearing the plant bench of old orchid Cactus plants and setting our pots of cuttings and seedlings. Purchased some Iris, Lily and peruvian daffodil bulbs from Walmart and put those in pots. Something different to look forward to. Went back and picked up a bag of Lily of the Valley roots for my wife. Will be interesting to see they grow.
The greenhouse project at the zoo has been cancelled. Zoo superintendent decided the greenhouse would be taken down and moved out to the nursery area behind the zoo to centralize those operations. The garden volunteers now have access to larger greenhouses and some neglected plants if we want to clean the area and repot plants to sell at the zoo fundraising plant sale in May. To get to the greenhouses we have to drive around back so its kind of humbug to work two different locations in the same day. So will have to plan time differently.
This past Monday I picked up staghorn ferns from our nursery friend and also dug out some Heliconias for my yard. I was given some really great bromeliads for my yard. The van load of ferns was taken to the zoo. The grower of the ferns joined us with a friend so he could mount the larger ferns on trees. So we had a group of six people and four ladders creating quite a stir at the zoo on Monday. We got four giant ferns mounted Monday and the remaining 46 stored in the zoo greenhouse.
Yesterday Alan and I returned to the zoo and mounted another 12 smaller ones. Most are going on palm trees about 8ft of the ground. Next Tuesday and Wed we go back again and try and finish the job.
I have a potential customer to take all of my Oldhamii Bamboo plants that I have for sale. He is putting a windbreak around a 17 acre Coffee Farm. If he buys everything it will raise enough money to fence my next section of forest.
My world travelling seed collecting friend came by yesterday to inspect the seeds I have been raising. He was amazed at how well they are doing. And then he dropped off 5 more packets of seeds gathered from his recent trip to South America. Then Saturday he's off to Canada, then Taiwan and maybe then to India. Who knows what interesting projects I will have in the future.
So from now for the next week its business as usual. Trimming, raking and clearing the remaining forest paths in preparation for a garden tour by friends and then more fencing work.
Oh, big problem at the moment is rats. They will not take the cheese in the traps and the poison we put down stays put and gets damp and mouldy. They seem to avoid everything we try. Very frustrating. We probably spot a dozen running around at animal feeding time in the evening.
