Sharon's blog: How very strange

Posted on Aug 1, 2012 11:39 AM

Mother Nature and I weren't quite in sync this morning. I had August on my mind and she was dallying around with another season. Now you'd think on the first day of August in the middle of extreme drought and constant unbearable heat at about 7 in the morning with the only green in sight that of the gray green that trees usually get just before they turn colors in fall, she'd have her head on straight.

No. Mother Nature had other ideas.

She turned on the wisteria.

Now if you know a thing about wisteria of the American kind, you'll know that in West Kentucky it starts blooming like this, usually in late March or early April.

It blooms before the foliage appears, so its branches are bare naked except for all the lovely drooping lavender clusters.

Now I'm wondering what Nature has in mind? I've been whining for lack of blooms, grumbling over the heat and drought, stressing over my hosta. Yeah, I said a bad word or two.

You reckon she heard me?

My wisteria is for goodness' sakes blooming. All over. Whatever is she thinking?  The seed pods are hanging there right along with all the foliage and the blooms.

It is a phenomenon.

I had my ever present phone with me so I snapped pictures before the blooms realized how hot and dry it is. This wisteria is covered in bud clusters.

But that isn't all. I turned around and beside Ethan's sunflower and creeping jenny and solar light that he planted, there is a tiny blue bloom. It's a little blurry, probably because the phone was shaking with the sudden burst of unexpected color this morning.

The sunflower is waning now, but look to its right. Another is on its way.

I won't even attempt to understand the clematis. It had its showing back in April, too. The leaves are brown, it's been in mostly shade for months, but here it is, just one more bloom. This is Blue Ravine. Amazing.

Don't try to explain it to me. I really don't want to know the whys or the hows of it. I'll just enjoy this very unusually strange quirky day and maybe I'll quit whining for awhile.

But isn't Nature just plain amazing?
